I heard once that the following process was formerly common in Italy (until Italian courts disclaimed jurisdiction). A claimant to a title such as "Count of Thingummy" would sue a friend for slanderously denying the claim. In court, the friend would say, whups, my mistake, he is the rightful Count of Thingummy.
