E-102 Gamma was a Video games good article, but it was removed from the list as it no longer met the good article criteria at the time. There are suggestions on the review page for improving the article. If you can improve it, please do; it may then be renominated. Review: May 9, 2014. (Reviewed version). |
Robotics project assessment
[edit]Hi
I have demoted the article as it was self-assessed by the person who recently expanded it. Self-assessments are welcome, up to a certain level, but above c-class should really go to peer review or preferably ask for an assessment change from the projects.
I will assess it later today. Chaosdruid (talk) 10:24, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about WP:WikiProject Robotics, but WP:WikiProject Video games and the others allow informal assessments, including self-assessments, for anything below GA-class. I'll keep this Robotics rule in mind in the future, though, as there is one more robotic Sonic character (E-123 Omega) whose article I will eventually take to GAN. Tezero (talk) 15:01, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, @Chaosdruid: if you're going to review it anyway, you might consider reviewing it for GA, as it's been at GAN for about a week and a half. Tezero (talk) 21:56, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- I would not really take this on as a GA nom, I do not know enough about the topic to fairly judge whether or not it was covered widely enough, nor would I be able to spot any errors or irregularities for the same reasons. If you haven't had a peer review, then might I suggest that, and putting the article on the GOCE list for a copy edit. I will give it a quick one later today.
- One thing I will say, is that there are a lot of quotes used as references. It seems to me these are just one ref with multiple quotes, so why not combine them into one ref? The issue is not whether or not that was actually said, but rather whether a statement can be contested or not. It is unlikely that people will contest quotes directly from the game, as most players will recognise that anyway, and if they play the game they can find them. Chaosdruid (talk) 17:56, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
- Quote refs in this format are pretty standard for video game character articles, though for the games themselves, quotes are often left out as it's assumed that the game, the subject of the article, is the source. (One could make a case that this should be the case for characters, too, but right now it isn't.) Tezero (talk) 17:59, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed, looking again, it seems there are only 7 out of 40 refs that are not primary, and only around 10 individual refs, as many of the 3 primary refs are repeated.
- You just don't need to do it. One ref does them all, and all those quotes are probably unnecessary. I understand the reason for the first use, "Mr. Robot (by Amy Rose)<ref>{{cite video game|title=Sonic Adventure|developer=Sonic Team|publisher=Sega|date=September 9, 1999|quote='''Amy:''' Stop, Mr. Robot!}}</ref>" , where the ref shows the exact time that he was given the nick-name.
- Others, such as these two I selected at random, do not need the quotes at all. They are more describing the storyline of the game, like a plot, and very few plots have any quotes in them.
- [13] "Gamma's story in Sonic Adventure opens with a training exercise as instructed by Eggman". IMO it is not necessary to use a ref. here, it's all the same thing from the same source, and is unlikely to be contested.
- [19] "Gamma is disturbed when he sees Beta being disassembled in a room on the way to Amy's, but continues on." - the quote used here is the same one, and simply adds "BETA", to prove that it is BETA in the room, IMO unnecessary.
- The whole paragraph is using the same ref, with different quotes, if you need to quote, put the quotes in the body, use one ref for the whole paragraph. "that's how it's normally done" is ok, only if the other "normally done" examples are correct. Chaosdruid (talk) 18:27, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Initial comments
[edit]Lead
[edit]- "E-102 Gamma (E-102ガンマ Ī-Wan-Ō-Tsū Ganma?) is a fictional robotic character who primarily appears in the 1998 video game Sonic Adventure." - the lead starts off with saying that he (can I call a robot 'he'?) primarily appears in Sonic Adventure, did he appear in any more games/comics in the franchise?
- I go into this more in the second paragraph. Basically, his entire canonical role is localized to Sonic Adventure, as he's created and dies within that game. However, he's a playable character in Sonic Shuffle, he's on collectibles in a couple other games, and there's a Sonic Battle character who looks a lot like him and other characters mistake for him. Tezero (talk) 19:37, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- "He has garnered mixed to positive comments from critics, who have praised his story and been more divided on his gameplay." - what were Gamma's negative reviews? What about his gameplay wasn't so well received from critics?
- Done. Tezero (talk) 19:37, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- Other than this the lead meets the criteria as it summarises the article.
Design and characteristics
[edit]- "While a robot, Gamma exhibits changes in morality—rebelling against Eggman[7]—and also forms a friendship with Amy Rose and experiences flashbacks of unpleasant events" - how about While a robot, Gamma exhibits changes in morality; rebelling against Eggman, forming a friendship with Amy Rose and experiencing flashbacks of unpleasant events. You don't have to use this, it's just a suggestions as there were too many 'ands' in one sentence it didn't make it sound too great?
- Reworded similarly: like your suggestion, but better preserving grammatical agreement, I think. Tezero (talk) 19:37, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
References
[edit]All references are in check and are reliable sources. I've checked them and they are all reliable magazines and official Sega sites. One reference is in Japanese, but can be translated so this shouldn't cause a problem.
On hold
[edit]There are very little problems with this article, the only issues I could find with it were a few copy editing issues. All references are reliable and in the right place, the lead almost meets the GA criteria and the Appearances and Reception sections both meet the criteria. I'll put this on hold for the standard seven days until those minor issues have been addressed. Thank you ☠ Jaguar ☠ 18:36, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
Close - promoted
[edit]The whole article meets the GA criteria. The prose is excellent (clear to read and understand), every reference is reliable and the citations are in the correct place. The lead now meets the GA criteria too, as it summarises the whole article. It's as comprehensive as it can be for a character who only appears mainly in one game! Looks like another Sonic GA, well done. ☠ Jaguar ☠ 14:37, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
