Talk:Edmund Dudley

Just wanted to give my thought to the year of birth of Edmund Dudley. According to wikipedia it's either 1462 or 1471-72. Well, we know that Dudley was made a privy councellor by Henry VII at the age of 23. That is well documented in contemporary sources. For Dudley to have been born in 1462 and to have joined the privy council at the young age of 23 he would've been joining the council in 1485 (1462+23) which would mean that he joined the same year as Henry VII was made king (which is highly unlikely. In Tudor times it was not, as it is today, benefitting for a person to be young. On the contrary. To get a seat at the privy council you would have to have had a very close connection to the king or to have played a major role at the war of the roses. Dudley had neither). Also, if you look at the painting of Empson, Henry VII and Dudley, Dudley seems to be quite a lot younger than the others. Maybe even as much as 20 years. I know that you can't judge age by looking at a painting especially when you have no clue as to who painted it or when, but still, I will argue that the YOB of 1462 is definitely wrong not only due to the discrepancies previously pointed out, but also because it would mean that Dudley would've been just 5 years the junior of Henry VII and that is underestimated as far as I'm concerned.
