Does anyone have a source on this "true story" about the fire truck flipping over, like a newspaper article or accident report or something? Schuminweb 08:10, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Merging of Nuisance alarm
[edit]It seems that nuisance alarm should be merged into this article. The two topics are basically the same, and this information would make a lovely addition to the False alarm article. Any thoughts? SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:51, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- agree - they're listed as synonymous in the articles so it seems the natural thing to do. mattp 13:08, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- Done. The merge is complete. Feel free to critique. SchuminWeb (Talk) 12:40, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
False alarms vs. nuisance alarms
[edit]False alarms and nuisance alarms are not the same thing. People use them interchangeable, but they are different. Nuisance alarms can be attributed to a source that is not actually a threat (e.g. the spider setting off a burgalar alarm). The detection system, or alarm, is working correctly, but it is not detecting the intended target. A false alarm is where the sensor detects something, but there is not threat present, nor is there anything present that may have set off the alarm. Most detection systems are not 100% effective, so you should expect some false alarms and some nuisance alarms. 128.244.75.14 13:39, 12 April 2007 (UTC)stoll
I would agree that they are not synonymous. A false alarm is an idication of an alarm for which there is no trigger. A nuisance alarm is an alarm indication for which there IS a trigger, but the alarm indication is unwanted.
A false alarm indicates a system that needs troubleshooting.
A nuisance alarm indicates a system that either needs sensor adjustment (too sensitive or maladjusted) or personnel/user training. e.g.- don't prop the door open, remember the hours when the alarms system is active, etc. Nukechaser (talk) 17:46, 10 August 2009 (UTC)nukechaser

A story about false alarms
[edit]So I was cooking something one day, and I added water to the pan to make sure it was hot enough. It was, and the steam set off the smoke detector. That was annoying. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:CE62:8430:1513:7069:B815:5D81 (talk) 23:01, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
