The **Free Syria flag**, also known as the **Independence Flag**, differs from the current Syrian flag and is associated with the opposition to the Assad government. Here's its design:

1. **Three horizontal stripes**:

  - **Green** (top)
  - **White** (middle)
  - **Black** (bottom)

2. **Three red stars**:

  - Located in the middle white stripe, equally spaced.
      1. Symbolism:

- **Green stripe**: Represents Syria's fertile land and its past independence. - **White stripe**: Stands for peace and a hopeful future. - **Black stripe**: Reflects the struggles against oppression. - **Three red stars**: Symbolize freedom, dignity, and justice, or alternatively, the three provinces of Greater Syria (Damascus, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor) during its independence era.

This flag is inspired by Syria’s original independence flag used after gaining freedom from French mandate rule in 1946 but was readopted in 2024 December 8 after Syrian rebels over threw the Syrian regime and gained freedom for the first time in 54 years 2607:FEA8:2A5E:2E00:ACE4:F0:A7DC:6DB3 (talk) 05:08, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for an edit

[edit]

The flag for the Syrian Arab Republic which was used from 1980 to 2024 should be listed as the de-jure flag because the flag of Syria was never actually replaced, the "old" flag is still legally the flag of Syria. So, I think the list of flags at the end of the article that says that the "old" flag was used from 1980 to 2024 should look like this:

De jure national flag of Syria (1980-present) Luke0821 (talk) 04:27, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The constitution of Syria was suspended on 12 December 2024, therefore Article 6 of that constitution, which described the national flag, no longer has effect, meaning that Syria has no de jure flag. Dn9ahx (talk) 15:42, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah... Thank you for clarifying that. Luke0821 (talk) 15:56, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is the white flag still in use?

[edit]

At the most recent meetings and media appearances of the leaders and ministers of the transitional government, the white flag is no longer being displayed. I think we have been too quick to jump to conclusions in describing it as some sort of “co-flag” when its use was in the post Assad era was limited to one cabinet meeting and the press conference afterwards.

Meeting with Jordanian diplomats today with only the Independence Flag - https://x.com/SanaAjel/status/1871141176163889411

A second meeting today, with a delegation from Qatar , with only the independence flag again - https://x.com/SanaAjel/status/1871151757100823000

I propose we remove it from the infobox and instead display it in the history section below in the subsection about the transitional government. I think we are giving it undue weight by leaving it in the infobox. Dn9ahx (talk) 18:47, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As there were no objections, I put the change suggested into effect. Dn9ahx (talk) 23:05, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've just seen this rn. I am opposed to removing the flag from the infobox. It hasn't even been more than a month and we cant expect them to place both flags everywhere they go. Give it a few months before doing so Abo Yemen 05:52, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think we shouldn't remove it from the infobox for now. Since it's a secondary flag, it makes sense that they don't use it in every meeting. I suggest we wait to see if the flag has actually been abandoned. TheInfoIcon (talk) 07:42, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assad flag sill in use

[edit]

The UN still (December 30) uses the 1980 flag: [1], [2]. Aotearoa (talk) 15:19, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The first source you quoted has not been updated since 28 October 2022. However I will add a note about the continued use of the Ba'athist-era flag at the UN if you wish. Dn9ahx (talk) 15:28, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Outdated sources and shouldn't be used Abo Yemen 15:32, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter. UN uses the same for defunct Afghan Islamic Republic. Beshogur (talk) 18:01, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
