– Per beyond doubt common name ngram, other page should be marked (disambiguation) and linked on renamed Ghulam Qadir RevolutionaryPatriot (talk) 10:02, 30 January 2025 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). - I appreciate your work on this article. I nevertheless oppose the suggested move: WP:COMMONNAME advises us that we have to use the most commonly used name in the sources. The relevant encyclopaedia, the Encyclopaedia of Islam, uses Ḳādir. Therefore I see no need for this change. WatkynBassett (talk) 06:51, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'd like to say that, in true honesty; you can see how involved I am in the topic area, what you've linked is the first time I've ever seen the spelling "Kadir" outside of the Wikipedia article itself. Either in Books, Websites even Social Media, he is written Qadir and you wouldn't know of the other spelling if it wasn't for wikipedia.
- What I had initially assumed is that the disambiguation page was in the first place prioritised for the simple article name with no parenthesis, as Ghulam "Qadir" is generally more common than "Kadir" is, so I had a thought that it was presumably decided to be shifted to prioritise a simple page name for most people rather than just the Famous Indo-Afghan commander.
- Please note it seems most of the article takes from Sarkar and Dalrymple, who write simply, Ghulam Qadir RevolutionaryPatriot (talk) 15:02, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- @RevolutionaryPatriot I wrote the article, so please do not assume what I know about the topic. WatkynBassett (talk) 15:17, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- Also Encyclopedia of Islam is writing names uniquely hence their writing of "Ḳādir" not necessarily being common name. for example Nad̲j̲īb al-Dawla for Najib ad-Dawla and Ḍabiṭa Khan for Zabita Khan. RevolutionaryPatriot (talk) 15:17, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- Keep. It's clear that transliterations of this name vary. One way of disambiguating is to use the "K" spelling. I can't see any advantage to moving it given that significant sources say "Kadir", but the article must be edited to ensure that whatever version is chosen, it's used consistently. We can't have an article titled "Ghulam Kadir" that has "Ghulam Qadir" in the lead. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 21:39, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
