rewrite

[edit]

Following long-standing concerns over the article being too long (over 45kb) and focusing too much on recent events (over half post-2000), I've undertaken a big rewrite, trying to ensure each part of Tranmere's history receives equal coverage. The pre-cleanup version is here U+003F? 13:55, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll begin a review now and make straightforward copyedits as I go. Please revert if I inadvertently guff the meaning. I'll jot queries below: Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:33, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

and have remained a League club since - gah! sounds funny. I'd change to " and have remained a member of the Football League since".  Done
I'd maybe place something in the lead about them being part of a city (Liverpool) with more illustrious neighbours Liverpool and Everton that overshadow them (?)  Done
usually either have ndashes with spaces or mdashes with no spaces. mdashes with spaces looks funny....  Done
On 15 November 1884, they won their first game 4–0 against Brunswick Rovers. - um, was this a friendly? A league game? needs some context  Done
On 16 September 1885, before their second season began, they were renamed Tranmere Rovers, taking the name of a previous team that had disbanded -? This needs explaining (the first incarnation) and is also notable enough for the lead  Done
what competition did they play in between 1884-88?  Done
In 1961, Tranmere's inspirational captain Harold Bell left the club. - retired? played elsewhere?  Not done
I don't know ... U+003F? 19:31, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
what strip was used between 1938 and 1962?  Done
"" He introduced an all-white strip — still used today — that set Tranmere apart from their local Division One rivals Everton. - erm, it wasn't used for a while in between. I'd say "revived in 2010" or something instead. Also Tranmere weren't playing in division one, so they weren't division one rivals (?) Reword maybe as "local rivals, first division club Everton"  Done
Mentioning some of the most notable players of the mid-late 80s would flesh out the section a bit. It was a successful period so there should be some names to add (?)  Done
Ditto 1990s when they nearly got to premier league.  Done
what strip was used between 2000 and 2010?  Done
some fleshing out of the most notable games can be added too.  Done

Overall, somewhat lacking in detail. Possibly split out of parent article too hastily but not an impossible task to fix above issues. Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:15, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Great suggestions, thanks! I think the article suffered from my terse style. How does it look now? U+003F? 21:18, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looking much better and well-on track - listing these players is good, but this could have been all done in a longish parent article. Are there any other players/events/games over the years worth mentioning or linking, or games worth elaborating on. I will review prose once all data in. Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:34, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I should have thought of this before - Looking at Category:Tranmere Rovers F.C. players, and thinking of this page as the most comprehensive page that is able to link to as many as possible, are there any others who are worth a sentence or two in places somehow? Casliber (talk · contribs) 22:32, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm all out of energy and ideas now. Overall still too short to satisfy GA you think? U+003F? 23:10, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think we've gotten over the line here. Possibly some more anecdotes would be good but...yeah. Specs below: Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:06, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
