- Far as I can see, it's more often called "subtraction" especially in the kinds of photography that are concerned with aesthetics, and in certain fields such as nuclear medicine, whilst "differencing" is the term in remote sensing and in the use of astrophotography to detect moving targets such as asteroids. That suggests to me that "Image subtraction" is the name that ought to apply to the merged article, with "differencing" becoming a paragraph for one class of applications.
