Former TCU football standout dies at age 77 July 17, 2002

Morris E. "Snake" Bailey, who played college football at TCU and a year in the Canadian Football League with Edmonton, has died.

Bailey, an Amarillo businessman, died Wednesday at the age of 77. At TCU, Bailey gained Southwest Conference fame as the receiving half of the "Berry-to-Bailey Battery" with Lindy Berry under legendary TCU coach L.R. "Dutch" Meyer.

Bailey was twice named All Southwest Conference as an end and set a then-school record for most pass receptions in one game with 12 against Oklahoma A&M in 1949. He ranked eighth in the nation in pass receiving that year. "Snake was the best thing that ever happened to me as a quarterback - if you threw the ball anywhere near him he caught it," Berry said for a story in Friday's Amarillo Globe-News. "He was a great guy. He had a great pair of hands, great concentration." Bailey earned his nickname for his running and catching exploits while playing football and basketball at Vernon High School. Bailey was the former president and chief executive officer of Plains Machinery Co., a Texas-based heavy equipment company founded in 1925 at Plainview and later headquartered in Amarillo.
