112nd Olympiad: Kleomantis of Kleitor?
[edit]The table currently lists Kleomantis of Kleitor as the victor in the Stadion at the 112th Olympiad. However, our list of Olympic winners of the Stadion race gives (based on Grenfell & Hunt's translation of P.Oxy.12) Gryllus of Chalcis instead. Our source for Kleomantis appears to be the FHW site, but I can't see what sources they are using or where they are getting this from. Does anyone have a better idea of the source of this name? The mystery continues. It seems that the olympic winners given by FHW are displaced one Olympiad from those given by P.Oxy.12. So our list gives Grylos of Chalcis as winning the 113th Olympiad, Kliton of Macedonia as winning the 114th, and Mikinas of Rhodes as having won the 115th; P.Oxy.12 has them winning the 112th, 113th, and 114th respectively. Hmm... Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 19:31, 1 May 2017 (UTC)- Now fixed by my latest edits. Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 15:36, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Reworking table
[edit]I've just finished going through and cleaning up the table here. Major changes:
- Added a source column. Any entry without a source is one I haven't verified.
- Sorted out the Olympiad/Julian date correspondence. I used Christesen & Torlone (2006)'s translation of Eusebius as the basis, and then fixed everything else up to correspond with that.
- Added a number of notes explaining specific issues.
- In at least two cases, changed the winner given in the table to agree with that given in Eusebius.

- do we know the sources of the rest of the table? where do they come from? SnowmanTower (talk) 14:49, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- I haven't looked for sources for most of the rest of the table – to be honest I was never really particularly interested in this article but got sucked into fixing a discrepancy in the dates mentioned on this talkpage above. If you are interested, the Contested Contests database will probably be a useful resource for tracking down sources. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 15:58, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- okay, thanks! If I can find the sources, I will update them later. SnowmanTower (talk) 18:32, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Polydamas of Skotoussa
[edit]There is a confusion between contemporary Skotoussa that is in Serres and ancient Skotoussa that was in Thessaly. I removed the link. http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Olympics/poly.html HelenHIL (talk) 10:49, 22 May 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by HelenHIL (talk • contribs) 10:42, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

[edit]There seems to be confusion about the places or the place. Checking and caution are necessary --HotaniKG (talk) 07:53, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
