Incorrect date for first edition
[edit]I don't feel qualified to make such a major change to a Wikipedia article, but the suggestion that MAIDEN STAKES was first published in 1928 is incorrect. This datum seems to have been taken from Smithers' biography of Yates but it seems likely that Smithers was misled by later editions of the book saying "First published 1928". Online dealers, and the British Library catalogue, all seem to confirm that the first edition was correctly dated as 1929.
Firm evidence, however, comes from the trade journal, THE BOOKSELLER which first listed the book (as forthcoming) in the 8 Feb 1929 issue and first lists it as published in the 12 Apr 1929 issue. This also ties in with the first review of the book also appearing (in the DERBYSHIRE ADVERTISER AND JOURNAL) on 12 Apr 1929 and with the last story having appeared in the April 1929 issue of THE WINDSOR MAGAZINE (which would have been on sale in March). - Interesting. My 1946 edition states "First Published 1928 Reprinted 1931" but I also have an edition which states "1929" on the title page. As the later editions do not show a 1929 reprint it seems reasonable to assume that this was actually the first edition. RGCorris (talk) 09:55, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- I have amended the article accordingly. RGCorris (talk) 09:59, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
