Talk:Media theory
Merge with Media Studies ?
[edit]- Yes, and Media Theory is a small stub, so suggest Media Theory redirects to Media Studies. Davidgauntlett 17:17, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- That's not a good idea, not least because the media studies entry itself is not very good. also, media theory is a pretty important subfield of media and communication research. BETTER to expand this stub (perhaps by moving some of the media studies article content here). It's weird to have such a big thing on communication theory and nothing on media theory (two competing and only partly complementary approaches). Bine maya 11:59, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- just realized why this confusion arose: because the definition of media theory was actually a definition of media studies (see to do section below). I've changed it- should be clearer now. Bine maya 14:49, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
To Do's
[edit]- putting up a better 1-2 sentence definition. the current one is:
" The term media theory refers to the research in the subject of (general as well as specific) media. Generally this refers to the aim of describing under what condition media emerge and which effects and possibilities result from their use. " This is a definition of media research or media studies, of which media theory is only one part. I'll try to go through a reputable textbook and dig up a better description. I hate to be so violent with a top page, but it cannot be left like this. Bine maya 14:13, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
done. now waiting for feedback on it: "The term media theory refers to (a) a model that explains the relationship between media and social reality or (b) a specific area of the academic field of media studies concerned with spelling out such models, and analyzing them. "Bine maya 14:47, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
- figure out relationship between media theory and mass communication theory- do they need to be discussed separetely or is a short note on the differences enough to treat them in one article? Bine maya 14:47, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
