Jazz (company)

This page "Mobilink" should be merged with and into page "Jazz (company)". All information should be merged into single page, as what actually happened is the rebranding of Mobilink to Jazz. While "Warid" page should be retained. --Chateau Louis XIV (talk) 19:49, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

History

Formerly known as Mobilink, the company was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between Saif Group and Motorola Inc. In February 2001, Egypt based Orascom Telecom Holding bought Motorola’s shares in Mobilink to become the majority shareholder with 69% control. Then in June 2007, Orascom further purchased the remaining shares under Saif Group’s control to become Mobilink’s 100% owner.

In 2010, Russian operator Vimpelcom (now VEON Ltd.) agreed to acquire most of the telecom assets of Orascom, including Mobilink, in a $6.5 billion deal, creating the world’s fifth-largest mobile network operator by subscriber base.

In November 2015, Vimpelcom announced the 100% acquisition of Pakistan’s Warid Telecom, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Group. Completed in July 2016 after due approvals, the first-ever local telecom company acquisition created a combined subscriber base of 50 million. Following this merger, Mobilink was officially rebranded to Jazz in 2017.

Re-branding

As part of Orascom-Vimplecom deal, all Orascom operations were bound to re-brand in all operating markets. Just like Orascom had announced to rebrand itself to become Global Telecom Holding in late 2012, in line with the outcome of the deal, Mobilink has reshaped itself along with changing the architecture of its brands.

Hi Talhatauqeer. I'm not convinced that the new version is much of an improvement. The old version states clearly that Mobilink rebranded to Jazz in 2017. The new version, on the other hand, states vaguely that the companies were going to plan for integration and merging into a single brand in the future. It doesn't explain that they ended up doing so. The two versions are otherwise largely the same. Instead, I'm deleting the "rebranding" section as it is both vague and unsourced. Best, Altamel (talk) 20:57, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi Altamel. Following sentences can be added at the end of paragraph under the heading "Merger with Warid and rebranding to Jazz".

In November 2016, Mobilink announced that Warid customers would be able to use their 3G network and Mobilink customers will be able to use Warid's LTE network.[3] As part of the Orascom-Vimpelcom deal, all Orascom operations were bound to re-brand in all operating markets. In January 2017, Mobilink CEO, Aamir Ibrahim, stated that both companies would be re-launched under the 'Jazz' brand name.

Hi Talhatauqeer. The first sentence is already in the Radio Frequency Summary section. The third sentence is already covered by the existing history section.
