Fair use rationale for Image:Royalcarriage.jpg
[edit]Image:Royalcarriage.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Seems that little ole Sri Lanka has the most expensive stae cars in the world: The government (of Sri Lanka) yesterday informed parliament that some 31 new bulletproof vehicles were purchased for VIP use.
Replying an oral query raised by UNP legislator Ravi Karunanayake, Chief Government Whip, Dinesh Gunewardena said 31 new bullet proof vehicles were imported after the 13th parliament was elected.
He said 12 vehicles were imported at US$ 1.8 million, 15 others at US$ 3.7 million and four others at US$ 13.23 million.
Gunewardena said the vehicles were imported from a range of countries including the United Kingdom, India, Germany and Czech Republic.

Personal names
[edit]If a car is used by, say, the president of a country and is not necessarily changed on a change of leader, it is best not to give the leader's name. It adds nothing to the article ("Vlad Dracul," adds nothing to "the president of Transylvania"), and potentially goes out of date after every election. There's no point in being too dogmatic about this, as cars are also changed frequently, and we're not going to keep this article up to date. Pol098 (talk) 13:22, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Hong Kong should be separately presented in this article, not under China
[edit]@Benlisquare: I hope I am making myself clear. Hong Kong, as her unique status, is not just "a city with special status", Hong Kong is a city with Sub-sovereignty, which was granted by the constitutional document the Basic Law. For example, Hong Kong is a separate member in many international organisations, such as WTO etc. Hong Kong is always represented and viewed separately from China, as a fact and custom. However, if you insist only sovereign state should be allowed to be presented individually, this will fall to the definition of sovereign state. A sovereign state is a state that is recognised by other independent sovereign states and is a member of the United Nations. In these circumstances, Taiwan is not. Taiwan is not widely recognised as an independent sovereign state and is not a member of the UN. However, practically we all understand Taiwan is a state and is different from China, therefore in most Wikipedia articles Taiwan is presented separately from the PRC, and so it should also apply to Hong Kong. Although in terms of sovereignty, Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, due to historical reason and the Basic Law, Hong Kong enjoys Sub-sovereignty and is widely presented internationally separately from China. Therefore, in this article, I see no reason why Hong Kong should not have it own.

Super tables
[edit]@Nikkimaria: Why do you think an enormous multi-column and multi-row table is better than prose content? There are many reasons why not to turn this article into a super-table, not the least of which are:
- loss of content to cell phone readers because the table gets rendered as a single-line offering of a drop-down box (screenshot)
- loss of content to cell phone readers because even if they expand the table vertically, they only see the first 3 of 6 columns, and may not even think there is more content to the right (screenshot)
- difficulty reading such a wide table on smaller screens, as well as being visually cluttering on wider screens such as desktop
- tables are more difficult to edit on any platform, and especially for newer editors and non-tech-savvy editors
- loss of current images in the content (I notice you are not including them in the table)
- loss of ability to use the Who Wrote That? tool (doesn't work for content within tables)
If your issue is the length of the table of contents, that can be dealt with by floating it to the right with {{TOC right}}.
There are likely more reasons why not to turn this content into a super-table. I am challenging your WP:BOLD edit. Please discuss before continuing. ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 07:53, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- The content of the Cars by state section contains data which is well suited to tabular presentation: state, user, car, support, and license plate (where relevant). Tabular presentation makes it much easier to identify these pieces of information at a glance. It also streamlines the article, which at the moment is challenging to read and edit at all, particularly for users with low-bandwidth connections. Tables are a common feature of articles, and newer and less tech-savvy editors are more likely to be using tools like VE that simplify the process of table editing further. I'm not sure what you were using to produce the above screenshots, but it appears that the mobile site displays the content correctly for cellphone readers, and poses no difficulty in reading and following the information. There are many examples of lists similar to this one that have attained featured status and could be used as models, including some that include images which could be added (cf. Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration or List of London Underground stations). Nikkimaria (talk) 15:04, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- The screenshots were from my cell phone, a typical Android phone, using Chrome browser app. I use it on occasion to check for how an article might look for a high percentage of Wikipedia readers. Per Help:Mobile access,
Approximately 65% of access to English Wikipedia is by mobile devices
, a number which includes larger screen mobile devices than just cell phones, though I would bet that most of that 65% is cell phone use. When a table starts having large blocks of text in individual cells (as yours does), as well as having multiple columns, then table use should be reconsidered. This is how some of your current table looks. Just because tables have been used in other articles doesn't mean this article and this rendition is good. "Low bandwidth"? If your goal is to trim the article so it is far smaller than the current 230K bytes, then why not just trim each section to contain just the content you are going to shoehorn into a table anyway? Or at least do a severe trimming first before evaluating whether it should be "table-ized". I use the source editor, not the visual editor, and have my doubts about ease of constructing a table using the visual editor. Using source editing, tables are difficult to edit because of the visual clutter of condensed code and a structure which lacks white space, not to mention a user needs the knowledge and skill to code a table (not me, but others) whereas editing prose is straightforward. Accessibility aside, I disagree that this datais well suited to tabular presentation
. ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 20:09, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- The screenshots were from my cell phone, a typical Android phone, using Chrome browser app. I use it on occasion to check for how an article might look for a high percentage of Wikipedia readers. Per Help:Mobile access,
- Could you verify that you are not trying to look at the desktop version on your mobile device? As far as I can tell across multiple devices, the mobile version does not look like you have presented - although presentation does vary slightly between interfaces, I can't replicate the behaviour you're reporting, and in each case the table seems much more usable than the previous version (and the text in the table could be streamlined or reformatted further). In the source code, each row is presented separately, and additional whitespace could be added between cells if desired. I'm not seeing any indication that this article is any less suited to tabular presentation than some of the examples at FL, and a table is an excellent way to concisely present complex lists like this. Nikkimaria (talk) 20:26, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Have done some reformatting; I think there are a few other details that could be migrated if additional work is needed. I also found List of tallest buildings by country as another comparator to show what images could look like if included. Nikkimaria (talk) 21:05, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I am checking Chrome browser on the cell phone, going to wikipedia.org, searching for "Official state car", then selecting the entry. Seems that Chrome is auto-launching the Wikipedia app (which I also have installed on my phone). That is likely the version you are not able to reproduce. If I scroll to the very bottom of the page, there is a very small link which says "view in browser". Clicking that goes back to Chrome and shows a slightly different version (the wiki mobile version) which instead of the small link saying "More information State, Users ..." it displays the large down-arrow and heading "Cars by state" (screenshot). In the mobile version all level 2 subheadings are collapsed at initial page load and tables are not collapsed, whereas the app only collapses the tables and displays all level 2 sections without auto-collapse. However, the tables render identically in these two versions. ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 22:02, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
Response to third opinion request: |
Because this article is so large and detailed, the changeover to table format (including images where available) is a welcome way to present data more concisely. I sympathize with frustrations trying to view WP pages on small screens, but the need to reduce this article's size and present content more concisely overrides concerns about viewing on small screens. I support the continued conversion to the table format. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:56, 4 January 2025 (UTC) — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:56, 4 January 2025 (UTC) |
Proposal for improving official state cars article
[edit]I believe the "Official State Cars" section could benefit from adding more images to enhance the visual appeal and clarity of the content. Additionally, it might be helpful to remove unnecessary text or redundant information to streamline the article and make it more accessible to readers. Including relevant images can provide a better understanding of the cars discussed, while simplifying the text can improve readability and navigation. 179.109.143.218 (talk) 23:47, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- It's worthwhile to improve images. But I suggest caution in adding more just "to enhance the visual appeal and clarity". Be sure any images actually illustrate something which can't be conveyed another way. Clarity is good if it tells the reader something. "Visual appeal", on the other hand, is a matter of opinion. If it's there for its own sake, I'm opposed.
- I think the following, for example, are a waste of space.
- Chile: Piñera departs from La Moneda Palace in a Genesis G90
- France: The Citroën DS, was commonly associated with de Gaulle during his presidency.
- South Korea: Armored Genesis EQ900L
- Then there is New Zealand: 2016 BMW 7-Series (G11) are used as the prime minister's state car.
- it's a car
- Taiwan: The presidential motorcade for Ma Ying-jeou, which features several BMW 7 Series
- it's a police car...with lights...at night
- Just a link to, say, "1960 Ford Galaxie" is sufficient
- Humpster (talk) 04:36, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the feedback! I agree that adding images should be done carefully to ensure they actually contribute to the reader's understanding and aren't just for decoration. I will consider the relevance of each image, making sure it illustrates something that cannot be conveyed through text alone.
- Regarding the examples mentioned (such as Piñera's Genesis G90 or the Citroën DS associated with de Gaulle), I will review the images to ensure they are truly informative and enhance the article. If an image doesn't add significant value to the explanation of the leader's car, we can consider removing or replacing it with a more relevant one.
- Additionally, I will try to simplify the text by removing any redundant information to improve the clarity and readability of the article. I appreciate the suggestions and will work on making the article more accessible and engaging for readers!179.109.143.218 (talk) 17:52, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Improving the Structure and Accessibility of 'Official State Cars
[edit]Hi everyone, I believe it's important to focus on providing useful, clear, and updated information for readers. While striving for perfection is admirable, an article’s main goal is to be accessible and informative. I feel that splitting content into too many sub-articles, especially when they are outdated, could make the article harder to navigate. It might be better to keep the content in the main article and use sub-articles only for more detailed exploration of specific aspects. Let’s work together to ensure the article is both accurate and reader-friendly, without getting too bogged down in excessive details. 179.109.143.159 (talk) 23:24, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
