I'm taking this.

General comments

[edit]
  • My first impression is that the lead is a bit too long. Plus initially I was confused what you actually mean by "Selena's sound".
  • Some bits could be further condensed to focus more on the singer himself. Like Widely considered to be Selena's signature song and her "trademark", "Como la Flor" has become part of the Texas musical cannon. could be cut.
  • In fact that's perhaps the problem with the lead: it seems to be a blow-by-blow account of the songs he composed and how each are significant, rather than about his life.
  • I recommend restructuring the lead based on Lady Gaga's article.
  • However, I say there's quite some potential in the content, most of which are attributed to local newspapers. I might give the body a thorough lookthrough.

1981 to 1988

[edit]
  • Pedro Astudillo was born on December 1, 1963, at the Las Palmas ranch in Laredo, Texas,[1][2] to Mexican immigrants from Guerrero, Mexico,[3] Pedro and Paz Astudillo.[4] Pedro and Paz immigrated to the United States in 1962 – Could be rewritten as: Pedro Astudillo was born on December 1, 1963, at the Las Palmas ranch in Laredo, Texas.[1][2] His parents, Pedro and Paz Astudillo,[4] are Mexican immigrants from Guerrero,[3] and arrived in the United States in 1962.
  • up until he was 13 years olduntil he was 13 years old
  • but rather a serendipitous discovery – is this something said by the singer himself? Would attribute and write in quotes
  • In 1985, Astudillo revealed his aspirations to his family, surprising them by announcing his pursuit of a music career, a passion he had concealed until then.In 1985, Astudillo revealed his aspirations to his family, who was surprised as he had not previously disclosed his passion for music with them.
  • Astudillo and Ojeda considered quitting the music industry, feeling overwhelmed by its challenges. – swap the clauses
  • Astudillo described it as a stroke of luck, feeling they were in the right place at the right time. – again will attribute
  • Los Bad Boyz's performance made a positive impression on Selena y Los Dinos and Abraham – Would add "however" at the beginning

Thanks for tackling this one. I look forward to the rest of your review. Best – jona 22:14, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

1989–1991

[edit]
  • EMI Latin's president, Jose Behar wanted – missing a comma after Behar
  • Astudillo's input on songwriting initially occurred with "Besitos", which he co-wrote with A. B. who regarded as a turning point for the band as it steered them towards exploring the cumbia genre in future releases. – I have some trouble understanding this sentence. Do you mean something like: Astudillo first contributed to songwriting with "Besitos," a track he co-wrote with A.B. Quintanilla. This song marked a significant turning point for the band as it encouraged them to delve deeper into the cumbia genre in subsequent releases.
  • Astudillo's collaboration with A. B. steered the band towards a more danceable style infused with cumbia influences. – might say "guided the band" instead of "steered the band".
  • Astudillo was removed from the studio after an unsuccessful session, he expressed his disappointment at not meeting the desired range. – use a semicolon

1992

[edit]
  • Also before we go on, are you keeping song names in quotes while italicizing album names?
  • In 2018, Rolling Stone named "Como la Flor" one of the best Latin pop songs. – It's a bit out of place here. Seems more relevant about the song than his career.

1993–94

[edit]
  • Astudillo received the nomination for Single of the Year for "Un Hombre Busca Una Mujer" as well as Male Vocalist of the Year at the 1993 Tejano Music Awards,[54] while Astudillo and Selena were nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year for "Siempre Estoy Pensando en Ti" – split the second half of the sentence away.
  • Despite claims of relying on Selena's fame – who made the claims?
  • The station received over 150 submissions, with the winner winning a dinner date with Astudillo – so what's the winning name?
  • At the Tejano Music Awards, Astudillo and A. B. continued to be snubbed from receiving Songwriter of the Year awards, a move criticized by Cabrera, who found them responsible for Selena's works – more clarity needed. So Cabrera criticised Astudillo and AB being snubbed, and attributing them for Selena's works?
  • No issues for 1995 prose

1996

[edit]
  • In January 1996, Astudillo made a significant change by cutting his long locks, opting for a more contemporary and sophisticated look.In January 1996, Astudillo opted for a more contemporary and sophisticated appearance by cutting his long locks. I might also join with the clause , despite reservations from EMI Latin and advice from his label's manager, Lee Garza. and then separate the other clause as its own sentence

Will continue reviewing.--ZKang123 (talk) 13:14, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

1997

[edit]
  • Despite inconveniences such as early morning filming schedules as a result of cutting his hair – why are filming schedules in the morning because of his short hair?
  • The movie's producers aimed to recreate events from Selena's lifetime, during which Astudillo had long hair. This required an extended filming schedule for Astudillo. – jona 18:14, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Would also clarify if it's stated in sources.
      • The previous subsection mentioned him cutting his hair. Wouldn't this suffice as evidence of a change in appearance following Selena's death, especially now that he is participating in a biopic about her, where he would need to resemble how he appeared during her lifetime? Or does this still lack clarity and require further explanation? – jona 21:57, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • due to excessively restrictive terms – what sort of terms, for example?
  • Those terms included the rights to the musicians' vocal performances that night for the sole purpose of commercial use such as home video release and CD distribution without additional pay to the respective artists or their label. This also contradicted their agreement with their label as it allowed the awards organization to profit off them and disinherited the label and the artist from the profits. – jona 18:14, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • producers issued ultimatums and also what ultimatums? That they get off the stage? Or go ahead and perform?
  • yet its success did not measure up to that of Como Te Extrano – I felt this was already repeating a previous statement Si Tu No Estas failed to replicate the commercial success.... Maybe I would write that the singer acknowledged its success did not match, or something.

1998–2000

[edit]
  • In September 1998, Astudillo released his lead single, "¿Dónde Estás Amor?" ... On April 20, 1999, ¿Dónde Estás Amor? was released I suppose one is the album and the other the song?
  • I find that 1997 and 1998-2000 sections could be merged. Also they seem to generally depict the turn of his successes, further elaborated in the subsequent section.
  • Did he also take on more actor roles since beyond Selena?
  • I added what I could find, nothing much outside of Selena, his music videos, and narration from documentaries on Selena. I changed the subsection to reflect that. – jona 18:14, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

2001-2002

[edit]
  • He revealed that discussions with EMI Latin indicated a softening Tejano market and the label..discussions with EMI Latin indicated a softening Tejano market, and the label add a comma
  • Astudillo founded, Peace Rock Records, an extension of – I think there's an extra comma.
  • Additionally, he opted for this hiatus because he – I think this chuck is unnecessary. You could write simply as Additionally, he noticed... and it still makes sense for his reasonings

More to come.--ZKang123 (talk) 14:15, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

2003-2009

[edit]
  • That entire chunk of paragraph has only one ref. Are there other references?
  • Also what's the name of this new album? And what was its reception?
  • Astudillo performed "Como Te Extrano" at the event. – might connect with the previous sentence. Like where he performed "Como Te Extrano"

2010 to present

[edit]
  • The concert was scuppered – would just say cancelled
  • Following the release of Selena: The Series, which spotlighted Astudillo and Ojeda's origins in Laredo, Astudillo "helped put Laredo on the map" – the last clause doesn't make sense. Do you mean Astudillo felt the limited series helped put Laredo on the map?
  • He released "Separaditos", which was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. – might rewrite: In 2021, he released "Separaditos", which was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • It contained a positive message of hope, according to Astudillo, who promoted the track through a TikTok dance challengeAccording to Astudillo, who promoted the track through a TikTok dance challenge, the song/album contained a positive message of hope.

More to come.--ZKang123 (talk) 07:02, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Artistic style

[edit]
  • and avoiding superficiality to be seen as substantive talent, not a novelty act. A bit confused on this part. "avoiding... not" is kind of a double negative at the end. Might suggest rewording like and did not intend superficiality to be regarded as substantive talent or a novelty act. or something
  • While often melancholic, he clarifies not all are sad; while finding that authenticity is paramount just avoid that odd semicolon and repeated "while". Like just write ...not all are sad and finds authenticity to be paramount.
  • by the persistent inquires of what?

Philanthropy

[edit]
  • For the chunk Astudillo dressed up as Santa Claus to fulfill a wish for Alejandrina Loera – I suggest summarizing more of this bit.

Personal life

[edit]
  • On August 1, 2005, Astudillo received a driving under the influence citation after he registered three times over the legal blood alcohol limit resulting in his Chevy Suburban crashing into barriers along a freeway loop in San Antonio. – split and rewrite this sentence

That's largely all for me for prose. I might do some spotchecking of sources later.--ZKang123 (talk) 08:52, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Spot checks

[edit]

Most are on Newspapers.com and behind a paywall, or offline and on Google books. I will assume good faith and inspect the sources which I have access to. Sources generally rely on local newspapers, which I say is reliable given coverage of this person.

  • I find the heavy use of sfn a bit odd; usually they would be used for books/reports that would be cited across the article. But most of the formatting is alright.
  • Refs 4, 163, 174 checks out
  • I wonder if for the more recent articles, are you able to provide links directly to the local news websites or only via Newspaper.com? It will help further in the source review.--ZKang123 (talk) 09:02, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Satisfied with the changes. Passed.--ZKang123 (talk) 09:53, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
