Trade Ban?

[edit]

The article briefly mentions "After the prohibition on sale...". Prohibition of sale? When did that happen? Where? Why? By whom? Is it dangerous? Does this tie into religion? The answers could be fascinating! Daviga1 (talk) 03:56, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, it did occur to me to check the references. Unlikely to be dangerous - "Spice Crops" by Weiss pp. 180-182 it has a GRAS number from the FDA. Still nothing on a ban. Daviga1 (talk) 04:06, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, further "mea culpas" as there was mention of some of this in the intro. It's late and I'm using a tiny phone screen. My fault. Chased some of the leads, and whaddya know? It is a fascinating story. Unfortunately I don't have the capacity to read Theatrum Botanicum exhaustively looking for clues, so it's unclear to me WHICH Portuguese king did the banning. I put in links to the historical pages related; anyone willing to dig deeper, please disambiguate further. Daviga1 (talk) 04:42, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
