Good topic, badly written

[edit]

I tried to make it more accessible for the average reader but it needs more work. Too many buzz words and bad sentence construction. I think the basic concept is sound however and the improvements worth doing.--ZadieTwinge (talk) 09:31, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should there be a separate page on Power Distance Index (PDI)? It seems to be an appropriate topic.

Paragraph of Geert Hofstede feels out of place in introduction.

[edit]

The paragraph beginning "Dutch Psychologist Geert Hofstede is a well renown professor of organizational anthropology and international management, as well as the director for the Institute for Research on Intercultural Cooperation" feels weird and out of place. It seems unusual to give a biographical sketch about him and his work in the introduction, even if he did make contributions to the field of study of the topic of the article.

I feel like it would suffice to say something like "Research into power distance relationships at IBM and across cultures has led researchers including Geert Hofstede to propose multiple dimensions to power relationships in culture, and develop the Power Distance Index."

More detail could be given subsequently. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.193.188.165 (talk) 00:54, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Care should be taken to avoid stating conclusions in Wikipedia's voice, as that can lead some editors to believe that it is improper synthesis. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:42, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism Section?

[edit]

Most of this appears to be tripe akin to "evolutionary psychology", and an effort should be made to compile a criticism section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.88.98.234 (talk) 15:58, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Discrimination

[edit]

I cannot see any connection between this article and discrimination. I would plan to remove the sidebar and to remove "power distance" from the related topics part of the discrimination template unless there are any pointers explaining why a connection should be maintained? BobKilcoyne (talk) 04:57, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe the connection should be severed - though I do think there is an argument for this article to be heavily reworked.
To quote from the first sentence in the Discrimination article: "Discrimination is the process of making unfair or prejudicial distinctions between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong"
Essentially, if power distance is high, discrimination is rampant - if power distance is low, discrimination is comparatively minimal. Looking at the section The workplace, we see that at employers with high power distance, senior staff are much more likely to socialise (e.g. have lunch with) people of approximately equal seniority. By contrast, at workplaces with rather low power distance, senior staff are much more likely to be interested in input from, and socialise with, members of staff who are much more junior relative to them.
