Basic Function of these muscles: These primary function of the semispinalis muscle group is the extension of the head, neck and upper back. It also plays a role in rotating (think twist or turn) these structures to the side opposite (of the spinal column) to which it is located. These muscles are sometimes referred to as the deep posterior (back) muscles.
