Moved from Bolton article
[edit]I have moved this here from the Bolton article but cannot find a reference to the first paragraph. I will continue to look. The second ref is a guide book.
The manor was recorded in the 11th Century as land granted to Roger de Poitou by William the Conqueror. In the 12th and 13th centuries the manor was held by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem and then the Hulton family. Legend said that the Saxon King Ælla of Deira built a summer palace near to where the hall stands above Ravedon Brook. In 739 Eanbald, Archbishop of York and Æthelberht, Bishop of Hexham are said to have dedicated a chapel to the Blessed Virgin at Smithills in response to the sacking of Lindisfarne.
In 1554 George Marsh was accused at Smithills Hall of false preaching. He is said to have stamped his foot at the entrance passage to the chapel, burning a footprint into the stone flag which can still be seen today.[1] --J3Mrs (talk) 20:34, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Spoof information
[edit]Unregistered IP users keep trying to add spoof information to the article and cite it with a cached website page which got its information from Wikipedia in the first place. I noticed they didn't use the current website page to cite it, that didn't suit their purposes. If their so-called information were to be true, then they should cite an independent reliable source, such as the Bolton News website. – HLE (talk) 15:06, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
