Vulkan (API) → Vulkan – There isn't anything else titled 'Vulkan' to require such title disambiguation (i.e. (API)). It's the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, judged both by a casual xtools glance and from Vulkan (disambiguation). Since 'Vulkan' redirects here anyway, it makes perfect sense already, and change the hatnote to {{Other uses}} SWinxy (talk) 05:41, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Support per nominator, as Vulkan already redirects here. JIP | Talk 09:39, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Support Clear primary topic, in English at least.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 11:05, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. No clear primary topic. Move Vulkan (disambiguation) back to Vulkan. It was moved without discussion in the first place, so this can hardly be used as a justification for this article being primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:35, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- Comment, when this was discussed nearly four years ago, I opposed a rename, however I see this time the proposal is to move to the primary title. Necrothesp raises a fair point that the primary title used to be the DAB up until 2 years ago, although from my observations, this article (the API one) is the primary topic for "Vulkan" when you observe page views. I'd probably lean support on this, but maybe not enough to commit. Bungle (talk • contribs) 21:03, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- Support, Google and Google news support the API as the primary topic, and related searches and topics at trends are dominated by references to video games or video game graphics, with some mention of a Vegas casino which I don't think we have an article for. Not seeing any current usage or long-term significance to override this yet. ASUKITE 16:57, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
Name based on the German word for Volcano?
[edit]In this edit kinda makes the implicit claim that Vulkan is named after the german word for Volcano without providing any sources. To the best of my knowledge, this is incorrect, and the name is taken after the Roman god Vulcan, but with the c changes to a k for trademarkability reasons. I also don't have a proper source for this, so I'm not proposing to document this in the article.
But perhaps we should revert the change? There's also a similar change done to the disambiguation article.
Or am I missing something here?
Kusmabite (talk) 12:30, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Look at [1]. Vulkan is in German. Latin is Vulcanus. The change to K might also be for trademark, but it is also German way.Maria Gemmi (talk) 12:41, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what that argument is supposed to mean. Yes, it's also the German word for Volcano. But it's also the Norwegian, Swedish, Danish (and probably other Germanic languages. That's entirely besides the point. The edit makes the implicit claim that Vulkan is named this was after the German word, without any reference to back it up. And I don't believe such a reference exists, because I don't think it's true.
- Mentioning that this has the same spelling as a German word is simply irrelevant.
- Kusmabite (talk) 13:18, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, all Germanic languages. But they are the ones using K, not Latin.Maria Gemmi (talk) 13:30, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Kusmabite (talk) 13:18, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Clearly not all Germanic languages, because English write it with a C, while still being a Germanic language.
- But I still fail to see how this is anything else than an irrelevant detail, and not something worth mentioning in the article, let alone the first sentence describing the API...
- Kusmabite (talk) 14:11, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Just to try to make it clearer:
- The Vulkan spec is made by Khronos, which is itself named based on a god from Classical_mythology(Chronos), but with the C replaced with a K.
- Vulkan is based on an initial contribution of the Mantle spec, and a Mantle is a tool that the god Vulcan uses.
- The sloagan for Vulkan during the initial launch was "Industry forged", and Vulcan is the god of the forge.
All of the above supports this being based on the name of the Roman god, and not the German word for "Volcano".
I'm not proposing to document the above, just to remove the pretty clearly irrelevant German language tidbit, which is causing confusion .
Kusmabite (talk) 14:38, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Update: Seems someone else decided to remove the claim. I did a similar change to the disambiguation-article, but forgot to log in first. Kusmabite (talk) 12:10, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@Kusmabite: […] this edit kinda makes the implicit claim that Vulkan is named after the german word for Volcano […]
I don’t think so. As far as I know the word Vulkan is not an English word (Wiktionary) therefore the reader may not know how to properly pronounce it. Pointing out Vulkan is of German origin can assist you, unless, of course, the German pronunciation is not the proper pronunciation. Maybe it’s pronounced like walkin’? ‑‑ K (🗪 | ✍) 19:27, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think so. Vulkan is usually pronounced like the name of the Roman god Vulcan, not like the German word for volcano. Kusmabite (talk) 11:22, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
