"Type Dangerous" is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released on June 6, 2025, as the lead single from her upcoming sixteenth studio album, through Gamma. The song marks Carey's first major solo release since her fifteenth studio album, Caution (2018), following a period focused on reissues and seasonal projects, including a 20th anniversary edition of The Emancipation of Mimi (2005).
Teased through a video showing Carey listening to a file labeled "T:D_MC16.mp3" in a car with a license plate reading "MC16", the single sparked speculation about a new album. Co-written and produced by Carey, Anderson .Paak, NWi, and Daniel Moore, "Type Dangerous" incorporates a sample from Eric B. & Rakim's 1987 track "Eric B. Is President". Musically, it is a hip hop soul and R&B song with elements of soul, and pop music with a new jack swing foundation, featuring percussion-heavy production. The lyrics explore an attraction to someone potentially dangerous, with Carey describing the release as the beginning of a new creative chapter.
Background
[edit]"Type Dangerous" was first teased through a short video on Carey's social media, in which she listened to a track labeled "T:D_MC16.mp3" while sitting in a car bearing a license plate reading "MC16" — prompting speculation about her sixteenth studio album.[1][2][3] The single marks Carey's first major solo release since her 2018 album Caution,[4][5] and follows a period focused on seasonal promotions and anniversary editions of her previous work, including a recent expanded reissue of The Emancipation of Mimi, released in May to celebrate the album's 20th anniversary.[6][7][8] The track, produced by Carey alongside NWi and Daniel Moore, samples Eric B. & Rakim's 1987 classic "Eric B. Is President".[8][9][10] In a press statement, Carey expressed excitement about the release, calling it the beginning of a new chapter and noting that she had spent significant time in the studio crafting new material.[11][12]
Composition
[edit]"Type Dangerous" is an R&B song, that samples Eric B. & Rakim's 1987 hip hop classic "Eric B. Is President", pairing the iconic groove with percussion-driven production that blends elements of new jack swing, soul and pop music.[13] The hip hop soul track struts with confidence as Carey expresses attraction toward someone who may be trouble — but the kind she's willing to embrace.[14]
Music video
[edit]The song's music video is directed by Joseph Kahn and will premiere on June 13.[15][16]
Live performances
[edit]On June 9, 2025, Carey performed "Type Dangerous" for the first time at the 2025 BET Awards as part of a medley with "It's Like That", with Rakim —whose song "Eric B. Is President" was sampled on the track— joining Carey on stage, and Anderson .Paak accompanying on drums.[17]
