Universe Ticket (2023–2024)

Universe League (Korean유니버스 리그) is a 2024-2025 South Korean boy group survival reality competition series created by SBS. It premiered on SBS TV on November 22, 2024, and airs every Friday following. The show will end with the formation of a boy group with the amount of members unknown as of right now. The final group will debut under F&F Entertainment, an entertainment company related to the clothing brand of the same name, F&F.

The show serves as a sequel to Universe Ticket, this time featuring all male contestants.

Concept

[edit]

Universe League is a K-pop survival show built around a league-style format, dividing 42 contestants into three teams: Beat, Rhythm, and Groove. The competition unfolds over five stages, collectively referred to as P.R.I.S.M, with each stage focusing on a distinct aspect of the contestants, otherwise known as players' journeys. Episode 1 starts off with the contest in the "P" stage, for "Pick", where the players form teams through a draft process and begin showcasing their skills. The ultimate goal is to win the Prism Cup, which secures the team's debut in a global boy group.[1]

Background and promotion

[edit]

At the end of the finale episode of Universe Ticket on January 17, 2024, a "Coming Soon" video was released and announced the second season titled Universe League.[2] On January 22, F&F Entertainment announced the preparation for the season two and planned to broadcast it on SBS at the end of this year.[3]

On April 15, SBS and F&F organized a global audition and began recruiting boys who were born before 2011 regardless of nationality starting April 22.[4]

On October 14, SBS announced that the program would premiere on November 22, after releasing the concept trailer on its social media accounts.[5] The next day, the profiles of the 42 contestants were revealed.[6]

Universe League is a K-pop survival show built around a league-style format, with 42 contestants divided into 3 teams. The show begins with "Pick", the first stage out of the five stages in P.R.I.S.M. The contestants form teams through a draft process and showcase their skills. The picked trainees form the "Starting Players". Those who are not picked need to wait until the mentors pick them to form the "Bench Players" of each team.

Right after the judges picked and formed their starting players, its time for them to choose their bench players to complete the team. The second stage from P.R.I.S.M, "Represent", is introduced. Players ranked 1-7 will be the starting players, while contestants ranked 8-14 will be the bench players. Yellow cards are given based on the results of the "Represent" round. The team which ranked second is given three yellow cards, while the team which ranked third is given six yellow cards. If a contestant receives two yellow cards, they are immediately be eliminated. Additionally, the trading system is also introduced. Teams are given trade tickets to choose the players that they want for their team. Trade tickets are given based on the results of the current round. The team who ranked first is given two trade tickets, while the team who ranked second is given one trade ticket.

Draft (Episode 1)

[edit]

The show takes place over 5 stages, collectively named P.R.I.S.M. This mission starts off with the first stage; P. for Pick, separated into two parts, the first of which being the Draft stage. This mission involves the 42 players being separated into seven teams of six players each. They each performed their assigned song in front of the director cast. Following each performance, the directors of each Team would select their First Pick from the team for their roster. If more than one Team selected the same player as their First Pick, the player could select the Team he would like to be a part of from the Teams that chose him. The Team(s) that wouldn't be chosen as a result of the player's choice could then select their Second Pick for their roster.

Immediately following the Draft team performances, the second part of the Pick stage, the Bench Test, would commence. The remaining 21 players who did not get drafted into a Team had to showcase their skills individually, 1-on-1 with the directors of each Team, to be scouted into their Bench Team. If any player was unable to be scouted into a Team by the end of the test, he would be eliminated from the show.

Represent Results (Episode 3)
[edit]

The benefit for the final winning team this mission was to avoid getting elimination strikes, which are Yellow Cards in this league-style format. The final Team score was calculated by adding the score of the Starting Team and Bench Team together. Whichever Team got the highest final score would be exempt from having any of their players receiving any Yellow Cards. For the 2nd and 3rd place Teams, the bottom 3 contestants in the 2nd place Team, and the bottom 6 contestants in the 3rd place Team, in terms of individual points, would all receive 1 Yellow Card each. Once any player receives 2 Yellow Cards further down the line, he will be eliminated.
