This user account is a bot that uses AutoWikiBrowser, operated by Crazynas (talk). It is used to make repetitive automated or semi-automated edits that would be extremely tedious to do manually, in accordance with the bot policy. The bot is currently inactive but retains the approval of the community. To stop this bot until restarted by the bot's owner, edit its talk page. Explanation of Current Use
[edit]Per the resounding support on my question at Talk:BRfA. I will be using this account for small-scale (less then 100 edits) but repetitive changes I see needing to be done, that I feel are obvious, or that a consensus for change has been reached. Currently the only unapproved task this bot has performed is diffusing Category:Magic: The Gathering sets to various sub-categories as the parent was getting unusable.
- If the edit summary includes "using AWB" it not in automatic mode (I'm editing in AWB). I will always disable this when editing with AWB in automatic mode to distinguish.
Considering that this bot is unapproved, an explanation is definitely in order, according to policy:
Because bots:
- are potentially capable of editing far faster than humans can; and
- have a lower level of scrutiny on each edit than a human editor; and
- may cause severe disruption if they malfunction or are misused
the community expects high standards before a bot is approved for use on designated tasks.
Operation of unapproved bots, or use of approved bots in unapproved ways outside their conditions of operation, is prohibited and may in some cases lead to blocking of the user account and possible sanctions for the operator.(bot policy)
Let's take this point by point:
- are potentially capable of editing far faster I've been setting the bot's edits per minute to under two (one edit every 35 seconds to be precise.) I could be changing categories faster than that on my main account with hotcat, but I prefer to let AWB run in the background and get on with productive work. (To be clear, I'm committing to running this at a pace equal to or less than one edit every 35 seconds)
- have a lower level of scrutiny The lists I build in AWB are custom, and checked by hand, I manually review the first few diffs after I start, to make sure I have everything set correctly. As I'm editing under 100 pages in a batch, creating the list is easy, actually going through and saving each edit maunally would be somewhat time consuming.
- may cause severe disruption Currently this bot only runs on AWB, with almost 200 users authorized for automatic load I hope AWB won't cause severe disruption.
The primary purpose of this tool is allow me (a real human editor) to productively contribute more, by allowing a background process to perform a series of changes I have already deemed to be in the best interests of the project. If you have an issue with the content this account is changing, realize that I made the choice of what it was to do and talk to me!
Administrators, although of course you are permitted to remove this bot from the AWB checkpage at any time, and for any reason (I even provided you the link), or just block the account, (via the big red button above). Please talk to me first, and consider if in the grand scheme of things I am contributing to or harming the project. Crazynas t 21:01, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
