Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the intersection of race/ethnicity and human abilities and behaviour, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

IBAN Request

[edit]

You are involved in a recently filed request for arbitration. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#IBAN Request and, if you wish to do so, enter your statement and any other material you wish to submit to the Arbitration Committee. As threaded discussion is not permitted on most arbitration pages, please ensure that you make all comments in your own section only. Additionally, the guide to arbitration and the Arbitration Committee's procedures may be of use.

Explaining ECR restrictions

[edit]

Hi Alex,

So to put things simply the thing you did that you weren't supposed to do was to edit about Israel / Palestine at all. Because of various factors related to prior arbitration cases I/P articles require all editors have accounts that have been around for 6 months and have made at least 500 constructive edits. You created your account 2 months ago and have 21 edits. As such you are actually restricted, by policy, from editing on the I/P topic area. Editing is broadly construed and making comments on another editor's talk page does count.

Now your complaint about WP:AGF is not without merit. However, considering you're editing in an area of the project that is closed to new editors, any discussion about this interaction is going to pivot back to that. I'd suggest you should say that you will not edit any further in I/P and agree not to post to the other editor's talk page except in a case where a post is unavoidable (such as if a mandatory notification is needed). Then go and find some less conflict-ridden area of the encyclopedia to learn the ropes. Simonm223 (talk) 15:46, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I am fine with that but I do want to note that there really needs to more rigorous pushback on POV editing on topics like these - people go on Wikipedia to see facts after all and not to see edits from people who call others "fascists" and "zionist trolls" as this one has. Alex 19041 (talk) 15:52, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Considering some of your other edits I think you need to learn a lot more about how Wikipedia handles the question of "fact" before you engage in contentious topics. Simonm223 (talk) 15:55, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Would you mind elaborating on that? My intention there was to add factual context that would be useful to someone reading that specific section in isolation. Alex 19041 (talk) 16:00, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Especially in contentious areas like racist media coverage of a moral panic in the United Kingdom we should avoid "but it's True!" statements, uncited, and in wiki voice especially. Simonm223 (talk) 16:05, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you want a good editing career at PIA topic area, you should comply with ECR first. At the moment, I think you have the upper hand on the issue of conduct, although I disagree with you on the issue of content. My advice is to take the win here, and come back to this topic area when you gain extended-confirmed status legitimately. Kenneth Kho (talk) 15:56, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to stop now because I try not to badger new editors too much but my parting comment is that you should take Kenneth's advice here. It's good advice. Simonm223 (talk) 15:58, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

[edit]

Hi Alex 19041! I noticed your contributions and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community. I hope you like it here and decide to stay.

I've noticed that you've expressed an interest in the Arab–Israeli conflict. Unfortunately, due to a history of conflict and disruptive editing it has been designated a contentious topic and is subject to some strict rules.

The rule that affects you most as a new or IP editor is the prohibition on making any edit related to the Arab–Israel conflict, including discussing articles on talk pages, unless you are logged into an account and that account is at least 30 days old and has made at least 500 edits.

This prohibition is broadly construed, so it includes edits such as adding the reaction of a public figure concerning the conflict to their article or noting the position of a company or organization as it relates to the conflict.

The exception to this rule is that you may request a specific change to an article on the talk page of that article or at this page. Please ensure that your requested edit complies with our neutral point of view and reliable sourcing policies, and if the edit is about a living person our policies on biographies of living people as well.

Any edits you make contrary to these rules are likely to be reverted, and repeated violations can lead to you being blocked from editing.

[edit]

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a report involving you at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement regarding a possible violation of an Arbitration Committee decision. The thread is Alex 19041. Thank you. – Est. 2021 (talk · contribs) 16:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Alex 19041,
It looks like you haven't been participating in this discussion as you keep adding to your existing comment. What you should be doing is adding a new comment with a fresh signature that shows you are checking with this discussion. Otherwise, it looks like you posted a comment when it was first started and never come back to read comments from administrators and editors. Don't rewrite existing comments, add new ones to reflect your current point of view. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:32, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have closed the discussion with the following warning, logged at WP:AELOG/2025 § User sanctions (CT/A-I): You are warned for violating the extended confirmed restriction even after saying you would abide by it. Further violations may result in immediate sanctions. If uncertain about whether an edit would violate the restriction, please ask an administrator. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 01:35, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
