Tsikhan Charniakevich (Belarusian: Ціхан Валер’евіч Чарнякевіч; born January 22, 1986, Pinsk, Brest region, Belarus) is a Belarusian literary researcher, literary critic, translator, and poet.

Biography

Tsikhan Charniakevich was born on January 22, 1986 in the city of Pinsk, Brest region, Belarus. Charniakevich graduated from the Faculty of Belarusian Philology and Culture of the Maxim Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University with a specialization in “Belarusian Language and Literature. Journalism” (2008), completed his master's degree (2009) and postgraduate studies at the same university (2012). In 2003-2005, he was also a student of the Belarusian Collegium with a specialization in “Philosophy. Literature” (Valancin Akudovich's course).

In 2008-2011, Charniakevich was an employee of the newspaper “Literature and Art” («Літаратура і мастацтва») (since 2010, editor of the criticism and bibliography department). In 2011-2015, he worked as the editor of the criticism department of the magazine “Youth” («Маладосць»). Member of the Belarusian PEN Center (since 2014)[1]. Columnist of the “Belarusian Service of Radio Liberty” since 2015[2]. In 2015-2021, Charniakevich was the press secretary of the Union of Belarusian Writers (since 2016, member of the UBL). Coordinator of the School of Young Writers (since 2018). Since 2023, Charniakevich has been the press secretary of the International Union of Belarusian Writers and the editor-in-chief of the bellit.info project[3]. In 2025, he received a residency scholarship at the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators (Visby, Sweden)[4].

Professional activity

Tsikhan Charniakevich is the compiler of the bibliographic guide “Translations of Foreign Literature in the Journal „Krynitsa“” (1988-2003)” («Пераклады твораў замежнай літаратуры ў часопісе „Крыніца“ (1988-2003)») (Minsk, 2010)[5] and the author of the critical-biographical essay “The Wanderer: A Book about the Poet Uladzimir Nyaklyaev” («Вандроўнік: кніга пра паэта Уладзіміра Някляева») (Minsk, 2016)[6]. Compiler and commentator of the books “Maksim Bahdanovich: Known and Unknown” («Максім Багдановіч: вядомы і невядомы») (Minsk, 2011) and “Lyavon Savyonok “„Works“” (Minsk, 2012). Author of the study “Representation of Diaspora and Migration Issues in the Modern Educational Process of Belarus (Secondary School)” (Minsk, 2018)[7]. Compiler and author of the foreword to the publication "City on a Hill. Anthology of Lithuanian Poetry" (Białystok, 2025)[8].

Since 2007, Charniakevich has been working as a critic and essayist. Literary reviews have been published in the magazines “ARCHE”, “Youth” («Маладосць»), “PrajdziSvet” («ПрайдзіСвет»), the newspapers “Literature and Art” («Літаратура і мастацтва»), “Literary Belarus” («Літаратурная Беларусь») and others[9]. Essays have been translated into English, German, Polish, Slovak, and Czech.

Charniakevich translates from Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Polish and English. Translator (together with Valery Stralko) into Belarusian of Svetlana Alexievich's book “Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets” (Minsk, 2013)[10]. Translator (together with Maria Martysevich and Andrei Khadanovich) into Belarusian of poems by Lithuanian poets for the collection "City on a Hill. Anthology of Lithuanian Poetry" (Białystok, 2025). Among the translated authors are Greta Ambrozajte, Davila Bogdonajte, Mantas Balakauskas, Lina Buividavičiūtė, Marus Burokas, Donaldas Kayokas, Cornelius Platsialis, Vytautas Stankus, Alvydas Šlėpikas, Antanas Šymkus, Austiea Jakas, Antanas A. Janinas and Jurgita Jaspanietė[11].
