PRODs and BLPPRODs

[edit]

Hi. Can you please slow down with PROD nominations, or at least spread them out across multiple days? Each PROD has to be manually reviewed, so having these additional ~50 expiring all at once is less than ideal. Also note that reliable external links count as sources for WP:BLPPROD as outlined at that page, so articles like Mubarak Ata Mubarak should not be tagged as such. Curbon7 (talk) 12:39, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Additionally, I reverted all four school articles you Prodded on the 24th. You need to Cite a valid reason for deletion, and as I'm pretty sure you've been told before, deletion processes do NOT apply to the article at hand, but rather to the subject of the article. WP:BEFORE is mandatory. Schools aren't automatically notable; you are absolutely correct in that. But simply stating that does not tell us anything about how that applies to those specific article. Further, simply being parochial, whether you mean that in the sense used in list title, or its formal general meaning, is not a reason to delete. You need to explain how it does not meet WP:NLIST. 4.37.252.50 (talk) 01:37, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah sorry re BLPPROD it was the first time I used it so had not noticed that rule. Re PROD I have no objection if you review them over several weeks or months. Chidgk1 (talk) 17:54, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AFDs

[edit]

Hello, Chidgk1,

It is not helpful to start a lot of AFD discussions and use a cookie-cutter deletion rationale, I did a search and it does not seem to be notable, that doesn't demonstrate that WP:BEFORE has been done. You can't expect discussion participants to do more work than you spent evaluating articles and assessing their sourcing. I could rightfully close these all as Procedural closes because it looks like you just copied and pasted the same deletion rationale on a lot of AFDs you started without putting any effort into the process at all. What sources came up in your search? Is there a possible ATD? Provide more useful information here.

You need to read WP:BEFORE and go through all of the checks for every single article you are considering nominating and write a specific deletion rationale that relates to that particular article. No one is getting brownie points for the most articles deleted so take your time and do the nomination process carefully and thoughtfully. Sound good? Liz Read! Talk! 06:40, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Liz I don’t expect brownie points but if I and others were to put in as much effort as you suggest I wonder how many articles would be deleted each year. I suspect that most of us would get discouraged and give up on deletions. I realize that many of the 83 thousand completely unsourced articles are about notable subjects and that Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced articles are valiantly working through them, but I suspect thousands are not.
You might ask why it matters. I don’t know how Google search works, but might not thousands of rubbish articles hanging around for years drag down the reputation of Wikipedia as a whole and thus the visibility of articles I care about? Chidgk1 (talk) 11:19, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chidgk1 Articles being unsourced is not a reason for deletion, see WP:NEXIST. You need to do a good faith WP:BEFORE before nominating, and present what you were able to find in your nomination statement: "The minimum search expected is a normal Google search, a Google Books search, a Google News search, and a Google News archive search; Google Scholar is suggested for academic subjects. Where possible, also please make use of The Wikipedia Library, which offers free access to various subscription databases of additional resources. Not every resource available in that collection will always be relevant in every situation, so it is not necessary to exhaustively check every database, but there are many resources which may be useful for specialized or older topics that might not Google well." TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 03:41, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Chidgk1,
I'm back! Lucky you. I'm going through a week's worth of AFDs and I'd like to ask you to slow down the pace of how many articles you nominate for deletion every day (or every week). Please pace yourself and don't overload a day's log of AFDs. Ideally, you are doing thorough BEFOREs on each article before you nominate it which is time-consuming for you and each participant to a discussion has to look for sources as well. We have a limited pool of editors who participate in AFD discussions and we already have to relist discussions, often several times, because of low participation. We don't want our editors to be overwhelmed with the volume of nominations. Unless the content is violating copyright or BLP guidelines, there is really no rush to delete articles so please pace yourself and nominate articles carefully and thoughtfully. Thank you for considering my suggestion. Liz Read! Talk! 05:23, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz Thank you and the other admins for your hard work on this. Thanks to you and the editors commenting on AfD the number of completely unsourced articles of interest to Wikiproject Turkey has been considerably decreased from the original 300. I cannot prove that has a long-term benefit, but given that AI tools nowadays are increasingly trying to integrate fact-checking of their answers I suspect it will eventually be worthwhile. Because presumably Sirri, Alexa etc mine Wikipedia quite often. And for example history here is sometimes used in political arguments, so even seemingly obscure facts can be contentious.
However you are right that these particular unsourced articles do not cause short-term problems. Sometimes I cite articles myself - for example I spent a fair amount of time adding many cites to Şefkat Tepe. Anyway I will not nominate any more AfD for a few weeks at least. Hello, Chidgk1,

If you weren't aware, the notability guideline for geographic locations is WP:GEOLAND. So, populated locations without a lot of supporting sources can still be considered notable. Liz Read! Talk! 18:20, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz Sorry I don’t remember Khanasor. My question in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hatay, Konak was whether I could create an article for a legally recognized populated place with no cites at all.
It seems that the answer is that all I would need is a single cite showing that a particular Mahallah#Turkey is legally recognized - so 32,261 articles according to Villages of Turkey. Actually it seems that on Turkish Wikipedia someone has already created all the articles with a bot.
Anyway I was just curious - I am definitely not intending to do such a thing. Chidgk1 (talk) 18:42, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag from Acıbadem Üniversitesi S.K., which you proposed for deletion. You listed the reason that the article was not notable as that the stadium in which the team plays has to few seats to be notable. This shows a lack of understanding for Wikipedia's notability guidelines and the proposed deletion process.
I appreciate your effots to clear the backlog of unsourced and non-notable articles (I, myself, nominate such articles for deletion) but a wp:BEFORE must be completed before deleting articles. A quick search revealed numerous sources which could potentially establish notablility. Additionally, the Turkish version of the article cites many sources. Therefore, the apropraite enu for deleting this article should be wp:AfD rather than PROD. If you still think this article should be deleted, please do not add {{proposed deletion}} back to the page. Instead, feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks!

@Lenny Marks: Proposing for deletion is supposed to be a quick and easy process when no opposition is expected. I proposed with a reason and you opposed. That’s it. Like most people you also helpfully and politely explained why you opposed, which will be useful if I or anyone else anyone decides to take it to AfD with its more time consuming and bureaucratic process. You are making a high number of AfD nominations in Wikipedia:WikiProject Turkey

[edit]

Hello Chidgk1. I recently started watching Wikipedia:WikiProject Turkey/Article alerts. You seem to be making a high number of AfDs. Most recent AfDs seem to be from you actually.

Given the Eurocentric bias in English-language Wikipedia (also see: Signpost Are Wikipedia articles representative of Western or world knowledge? ), I am concerned that you are contributing to that.

There are very few Turkish speakers on English-language Wikipedia, and you are much more active than most of them. I'd recommend more time to be given for sources to be found. You also don't seem to try to find sources yourself, for example: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Orduspor_(women's_basketball). If you are very interested in AfDs in Turkey-related topics, but you don't speak Turkish, you can also try google translate? Bogazicili (talk) 12:55, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Bogazicili I am glad you are watching those alerts.
Most of the articles I nominated had been tagged years ago for having no sources. So I think there has been plenty of time for sources to be found.
And as I have also created and improved several articles about Turkey I don’t think I have increased any Eurocentric bias. Chidgk1 (talk) 16:08, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok thanks. I just wanted to draw your attention to that signpost issue and Wikipedia:Systemic bias.
I might be also in a suspicious Wiki mood lately given the large number of socks in a topic area I'm involved in. I hope you don't take this personally :) Bogazicili (talk) 16:19, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. I am very rarely in Istanbul (maybe once or twice a year) but if you live there we could perhaps meet up some time. Or indeed if you are ever in Samsun Chidgk1 (talk) 16:39, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bogazicili: just a note that your first linked article appears to code Turkey as European (see for example Turkish appearing in the chart of European languages)... So the "euro" in Eurocentric bias includes Turkey. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:35, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Horse Eye's Back I was a bit peeved with https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/jan/06/london-is-europes-most-congested-city-with-drivers-sat-in-traffic-an-average-101-hours-last-year when I looked at the survey and they had classified Istanbul as in Asia. @Bogazicili would know better than me but I suspect most of the Istanbul congestion is on the European side or on the bridges. High number of AfD for Turkish train articles

[edit]

Hi,

Over the past several months I have noticed you consistently nominate many Turkish railway articles for deletion. It seems your rationale is that they are unsourced, therefore I believe it would be more productive if instead you would bring them the attention of the community instead of nominating them for deletion right away. May I ask why you are doing this? Cheers. (Central Data Bank (talk) 18:18, 22 January 2025 (UTC))[reply]

@Central Data Bank Not specifically rail articles but completely unsourced articles at https://bambots.brucemyers.com/cwb/bycat/Turkey.html#Cites%20no%20sources
Wikiproject Turkey is not very active but I brought them to the attention of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains/Archive: 2024#Turkey
Reasons:
1) A little bit of relaxation after trying to get GA for other articles.
2) If the number of completely unsourced articles tagged with the Turkey Wikiproject are reduced then PERHAPS articles in the project generally will be considered more reliable when AI hoovers up info from Wikipedia. So it MIGHT benefit the project as a whole. Chidgk1 (talk) 06:36, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Chidgk1 thanks for clarifying. Unfortunately railway articles on Turkey are not high priority for most so only a handful of users (myself included) take time to edit them, which becomes quite difficult with life getting in the way. Looking through the IZBAN articles, I can see that updates are required for them, as they were created over a decade ago. I have been slowly working on improving them over the past few months, but like I said, I can't promise a timeline. Your most recent tags will be the next articles I source and expand upon. Cheers. Responding to alt text question

[edit]

Hi! I just wanted to respond about your Help desk question, which got archived off the desk. If I'm understanding things correctly from reading over the Phabricator discussions, you can save default alt text for a media file on Commons (which is what you did), but, Mediawiki (the software behind Wikipedia and all its sister projects) doesn't do anything with it currently. The software has yet to be extended to pull alt text from an "external" source such as Commons.

Unfortunately, at present you'll have to copy-and-paste the alt text over onto English Wikipedia. This could be semi-automated with a userscript, though I'm not aware of one existing; you could dig into it or ask at the tech village pump if interested. I hope that helps clarify things. Thank you for contributing to the projects, and if you have any other questions ask away, or feel free to drop by my talk page in the future! --Slowking Man (talk) 22:52, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank for explaining Chidgk1 (talk) 06:02, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The ping seems to have failed, I've seen it once I checked whether the discussion was closed. İzmir–Afyon railway is a main line, thus fullfills the third point on WP:RAILOUTCOMES. But there isn't really a well-established guideline about the stations. I personally do consider any stations on the major suburban networks or metro systems as inherently notable, but really hard to get past behind trivial coverage on the Net, especially on a non-English speaking country. There are few written books on such topics as well, so articles have to rely on non-secondary sources such as forums, blogs, wikis. It still fulfills the WP:GNG and avoiding article creep IMHO.

I felt like I'd write all that down because I've seen other noms, and didn't want to bother with answering these too; yet my reply on Egekent 2 was also vague as well, at least when I read it now&then. I have expected others to take part, but well. Maybe taking a third opinion on the subject would be nice. Regards & have a nice day,

Edit: There also might be some non-trivial but hard-to-cite or omitted stuff on the subject. I was reminded of that after looking at Ayrılık Çeşmesi railway station—I know the station gets frequent coverage as people prefer the station for suicide owing to its name. However the news about suicides are often censored, and thus I don't see a way for citing without original research/self-publishing a primary source, which would violate impartiality and unethical as well. ahmetlii  (Please ping me on a reply!) 22:59, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
