DannyS712 bot Task 14

[edit]

DannyS712 bot Task 14 is removing the ending }} when it's on the same line.[1][2] PrimeHunter (talk) 12:02, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter thanks for letting me know. I should be able to sort it out in the next few days DannyS712 (talk) 17:31, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter sorry for the delay, should be fixed now - https://github.com/DannyS712/bot/commit/b96b77533ec27e11c98e8bcf8f503584a0fc71aa --DannyS712 (talk) 05:49, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Now it duplicates the name.[3] I have reverted all six edits today. None of them had an incorrect name before. Task 14 is only for pages listed under E in Category:Stub message templates needing attention. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:19, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter unfortunately the bot can't tell what the sortkey of the category is (i.e. if it is under "E") - but the substitution is meant to have no change if the name was already correct. I have re-patched this with https://github.com/DannyS712/bot/commit/ed29eb994ca2dfe14d3e597e05c21e85840fa2cc and then https://github.com/DannyS712/bot/commit/1500718f9dbd5588e6e41047b4004857ca3fa647 (since after the first patch edits became Special:Diff/1228671069 - an improvement but not a fix) which should properly fix it, sorry - I guess that is what I get for writing the first patch before coffee. I'll monitor the bot for the rest of the evening and then tomorrow --DannyS712 (talk) 14:42, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DannyS712 bot

[edit]

Hi one of the bot tasks is to create a list of non-orphaned articles that have the orphan tag. I’ve been manually removing the tags from the lists created by the bot on and off for several years and I’ve never once seen it make a mistake. Manual tag removal is easy but time consuming and I wonder whether there would be consensus now to get the bot to remove the tag automatically? Mccapra (talk) 05:28, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mccapra there would have to be some consensus in favor of that, and I don't have the time to look into it at the moment, sorry --DannyS712 (talk) 18:11, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your live clock

[edit]

Hi, I am a user of the live clock gadget, and recently discovered your rewriting of it which allows users to change the time zone as preferred. I'm a bit lost on how to install this (for use on the English Wikipedia) because, frankly, I'm coding illiterate. I was wondering if you had a push in the right direction for me. Thanks, Personhumanperson (talk) 13:11, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Personhumanperson on User:Personhumanperson/common.js you should be able to add mw.loader.load( '//www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-UTCLiveClock.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' ); to load the latest version --DannyS712 (talk) 05:33, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Neuropol add the line window.LiveClockTimeZone = 'XXX'; to your common.js, replacing XXX with either "local" (for the browser timezone) or a value accepted by https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Intl/DateTimeFormat/DateTimeFormat#timezone --DannyS712 (talk) 14:12, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

[edit]

Hello DannyS712,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

WikiCup 2024 April newsletter

[edit]

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Progress

[edit]

Hey DannyS712, I hope you're well. There's no pressure or rush, especially because all of the much appreciated work that you do is optional, but I was just curious if you made any progress on this? To recap, the goal was to have your bot mark redirects left behind from page moves, by users with the page mover user permission, as patrolled. There was also a brief part of the discussion that included marking redirects created by administrators as patrolled, as all administrators are already included in WP:RAL and it would help to reduce the load time of the page when editing to add/remove users. Hey man im josh (talk) 12:45, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hey man im josh BRFA filed, Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DannyS712 bot III 74. Sorry for the delay. As for patrolling all redirects from admins, happy to do that but I need an actual discussion with consensus --DannyS712 (talk) 00:03, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. About DiscussionCloser

[edit]

Hey DannyS712! Thanks for creating this script. I wanted to let you know that the "close" links are no longer appearing on talk pages while using any non-Vector skins, most likely as a result of the new markup — you might want to take a look at that. Let me know if you have any questions! TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 07:30, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TechnoSquirrel69 I'll try to take a look when I have a chance --DannyS712 (talk) 18:48, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can confirm, I spent over an hour troubleshooting because I thought it was a conflict with one of my other scripts. It looks like the issue is with the span.mw-headline and heading selector; this commit to VisualEditor might be a good example of how another script fixed it. I don't know Javascript, otherwise I'd try to come up with a patch myself to help you out. The WordsmithTalk to me 02:22, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
XFDCloser just fixed the issue too, here is their patch. This phabricator ticket seems like it also has some useful information. The WordsmithTalk to me 18:57, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to the file on Mhusek for editing on 2023 IIHF World Championship Division II. The editor tried to use 'X' (twitter) as a source with only the url, no titles, no dates, nothing. The bot appropriately prompted the user to fix it, but I have removed it since it was not a reliable source anyway. Not a false positive. Needs no remedy. Did not know if I was allowed to contribute on the reports page.18abruce (talk) 14:00, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@18abruce you're allowed to contribute to that page, but that is not what the report was about - if you take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:AbuseLog?wpSearchUser=Mhusek you'll see that the user was asking about some edits that were entirely disallowed by the system --DannyS712 (talk) 14:03, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. Just an FYI that Wikipedia:Database reports/Orphans with incoming links appears to be broken because pl_namespace and pl_title were dropped from pagelinks. I believe the change would be

INNER JOIN ${database}.pagelinks link ON p.page_title = link.pl_title
  AND p.page_namespace = link.pl_namespace

to

INNER JOIN ${database}.linktarget ON p.page_title = lt_title
   AND p.page_namespace = lt_namespace

Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates

[edit]

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
  • The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Administrator Elections: Discussion phase

[edit]
Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–? - Scrutineering phase

During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Editors in good standing (unblocked and without sanctions) are invited to nominate themselves or another editor to be a Guild coordinator (with their permission, of course) until 23:59 on 15 December (UTC). The voting phase begins at 00:01 on 16 December and runs until 23:59 on 31 December. Questions may be asked of candidates at any stage in the process. Elected coordinators will serve a six-month term from 1 January through 30 June.

Drive: In our September Backlog Elimination Drive, 67 editors signed up, 39 completed at least one copy edit, and between them they edited 682,696 words comprising 507 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: The October Copy Editing Blitz saw 16 editors sign-up, 15 of whom completed at least one copy edit. They edited 76,776 words comprising 35 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: In our November Backlog Elimination Drive, 432,320 words in 151 articles were copy edited. Of the 54 users who signed up, 33 copy edited at least one article. Barnstars awarded are posted here.

Blitz: The December Blitz will begin at 00:00 on 15 December (UTC) and will end on 21 December at 23:59. Sign up here. Barnstars awarded will be posted here.

Progress report: As of 22:12, 7 December 2024 (UTC), GOCE copy editors have completed 333 requests since 1 January, and the backlog of tagged articles stands at 2,401 articles.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, Mox Eden and Wracking.

DannyS712 bot III

[edit]

Hi Danny. Just thought I'd let you know that this bot just approved a page that was a redirect to itself, in this case Ella Morris (disambiguation). I'd made an error when creating the redirect, and only noticed afterwards, so maybe it's be worth not approving redirects that redirect to same page? I realise it's probably not a common case, but it would catch human errors. I otherwise can't see any legit reason why a redirect should be to itself, and no doubt a human would of corrected it rather than approve. CNC (talk) 11:42, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
