Welcome!
[edit]Hello, Dsandii, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.
I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited appears to be an article about yourself. Writing about yourself is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians.
As this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. We require individuals to meet Wikipedia's definition of a notable person to accept articles about them. A page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.
If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to or change it, please propose the changes on its talk page.
Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}}
before the question. Again, welcome! Bleeng (talk) 06:37, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Bleeng: Hi Bleeng, thanks for the heads up. However, I'm confused. To my knowledge, the only such article I edited was my user page (User:Dsandii), which I thought was essentially my profile. Did I accidentally create something else, or am I not supposed to modify that page? Dsandii (talk) 06:43, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

GoldRomean (talk) 23:35, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Generative LLM sources
[edit]Hello, I'm MtBotany, I noticed you used botanicalrealm.com as a source for the article Scutellaria arenicola. It is an unreliable source due to being generated by a Large Language Model. If you have any questions WP:PING me here or ask on my talk page. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 04:16, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- MtBotany Good to know, I was suspicious but couldn't confirm. Dsandii (talk) 04:37, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- I figured it out because some of the articles contain obvious inhuman blunders and I was curious enough to dig through the site for a while. Saying a plant is from North America in the introduction then later saying it that it is native to several southeast Asian countries, lists of random colors for flowers that actually are just yellow, etc. Some of the pages look more or less fine, but I suspect they all contain subtle errors. The sites botanikks.com and selinawamucii.com are also LLM generated plus there is a site called rain-tree.com that you are likely to come across since it focuses on tropical plants. It is not LLM, but is full of not quite right information even when it is not promoting its herbal remedies.
- It looks like you already know about Flora of North America and eFloras. Two other places to look for good sources are Biodiverity Heritage Library, for older texts particularly scientific journals and monographs and archive.org for general books like wildflower guides.
- Welcome and happy editing. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 13:40, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- MtBotany thank you for the detailed info. Do you know if there's something akin to a reference blacklist for these known LLM wordsalad websites? if not there totally should be! I'd even love a browser plug-in like that. Dsandii (talk) 14:10, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- I wish there was, but nothing yet. I should work on advocating for seeing if there is more appetite for adding them to something like Wikipedia:Deprecated sources. Right now there is a whole process to get on that list involving multiple discussions that I have not had the patience to push for. But it is what Wikipedia has right now and the organization is (for both good an ill) very careful about changes that puts anything on a fast track towards "Don't use this".
- For editing plants I've more or less decided that anything commercial is something to avoid because even the human written .com sites are often biased about factual information like cold hardiness zones or just laziness on fact checking. The big exception is cultivar names since sometimes extension service websites will not have trade names for plants.
- Instead of searching the whole web I'll often limit my search to .org .edu or .gov sites if searching in English using site:.edu to mostly get universities and state extension services when looking up information about, say, the honey locust. I've not figured out an equivalent shortcut for searching in German since most sites in Germany are just at .de. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 05:05, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
