DYK for Carol and Eric Hafner

[edit]

On 5 January 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Carol and Eric Hafner, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Carol and Eric Hafner ran for five United States House of Representatives seats for states in which they did not live, and mostly had not visited? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Carol and Eric Hafner. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Carol and Eric Hafner), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Chaz Stevens, 2025

[edit]

George;

Good day, hope 2025 is off to a roaring start.

Since we last spoke, lots of notable stuff happened around here.

- Bible ban weakened Florida's book ban law - Federal lawsuit (ongoing) against Broward Schools for viewpoint discrimination - State lawsuit (dismissed) to throw Trump from Florida ballot

And a bunch more. Wondering if we could chat and get an updated page? Wanting to play by the rules, looking to do this the right way.

Chaz ChazStevensOfficial (talk) 14:15, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I think you've got my email address? Send me links to newspaper articles and I would love to add them. If a lot of text gets added, maybe even another photo. --GRuban (talk) 16:39, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Happy new year 2025! We had, pictured on the Main page, on 14 January Tosca, in memory of her first appearance on stage OTD in 1900, and of principal author Brian Boulton, and today is Schubert's birthday. I added a pic to his article (and my story) and raised a question on the talk, regarding the lead image. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:54, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding the image for Elisheva Biernoff! I checked Commons, but need to get better at using the neat thing you made while at the company that can't spell its name ;) Jonathan Deamer (talk) 12:49, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Heh - that's bittersweet. I should change that blurb on my user page. I was very proud of that tool once, but it has been gutted since I left, and the Biernoff image was from a straightforward Flickr search. Anyway, glad you liked the image! --GRuban (talk) 13:09, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Hello! I also wanted to say thank you for adding images, especially on articles I've contributed, and can't wait to see more! How can I notice images you uploaded, though? ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 15:52, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks ! But I'm not sure what you mean by "notice images you uploaded". Do you mean:
  • images I add to articles you wrote? Those articles are usually in your watchlist, so you can check your watchlist and look for changes by me, GRuban; I normally make an edit comment like "+img".
  • images that I add to articles in general? I guess you can look at my contributions to articles the same way, for comments saying "+img" or similar. I often add several images each week.
  • all images I've ever uploaded to articles? I try to add the ones that make it into articles, with links to those, to my Commons user page, but that's a manual process, so often a few months behind. You can also look at my raw Commons uploads, which will be on time, but will include many images that don't make it into articles, multiple crops of the same image, backs of old images to prove lack of copyright notice, etc. (For example, earlier this month I uploaded half dozen images of a certain lady who said she didn't want an article after all, so they may well never go anywhere unless she changes her mind again.) --GRuban (talk) 18:58, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Vakhtang Machavariani

[edit]

I wonder if you can find sources for Vakhtang Machavariani, - I'd be interested in what exactly he did at the Bolshoi ("a GMD of the Russian Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra Millenium"??) and which orchestra might be meant by what appeared as "Big Symphony Orchestra in Moscow". One of the "soft" websites referred to Prawda. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:35, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding! Would you find the Mariinsky ref that seems to have been available at some point but results in a 404 error now? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:37, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As soon as I wrote the last q I found a ref that looks like how a typical bio for concerts would have been translated into English. It has: "Later from 2000 Vakhtang Matchavariani has served as the Artistic Director and GMD of the “Russian Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra Millennium”." Would you agree - perhaps comparing to something similar in Russian - that it might mean that he was responsible for the millenium program of the orchestra? It has: "Large Radio & TV Symphony Orchestra of USSR", - would you agree that it may mean the radio orchestra now named Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:34, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I found now something that looks better. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:55, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please look into Alla Osipenko, - all refs in Russian so far. I moved one to further reading for now because I have no idea (as it's offline) what it may be about. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:35, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

She's on the main page now, - had a Washington Post obit by her biographer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:10, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Russian ballet again, two giants died the same day, I am more pleased with Yuri Vladimirov than Yury Grigorovich, can't find a Bolshoi page for the latter, and for the former only one in Russian (while colleagues have something in English also), and there's a load of Russian refs for G.'s awards, all in Russian and hard to verify, and two obviously the same but used for different things (while the missing Bolshoi page might have them all neatly together ...), and there are plenty of awards commented out because of no ref. Would you have time to look? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:20, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's a lot there! I don't feel I can do them justice. Will look. --GRuban (talk) 22:28, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Found Bolshoi page, it didn't have details on the commented out awards, will keep looking. Also found more details on his marital life, which I again can't do justice. It's er ... thoroughly worthy of an article by User:SusunW, if you've read her work... ! --GRuban (talk) 23:35, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much! - My friend Susun has too many RL problems. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:03, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, - I can't find the Bolshoi page for Nina Sorokina either. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:07, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: Found the Bolshoi page for Nina Sorokina (not live, but archived) cited a lot to it. Not quite sure about the bit cited to the Boston Globe "With a pas de deux from Esmeralda, the couple achieved the gold medal at the first International Ballet Competition in Moscow in 1969, when Mikhail Baryshnikov won as soloist"; the Bolshoi page says she won first place for herself at that competition, and they won a "gold star" with Vladimirov as a couple at some similar competition in Paris that same year:
literally
1969 — became a laureate of the 1st prize of the 1st All-Union Competition of New Choreographic Numbers in Moscow and the 1st prize of the International Ballet Competition in Moscow; at the International Dance Festival in Paris, she was awarded the Gold Star for “Best Ballet Pair” (together with Yuri Vladimirov).
I found the French and Russian Wikipedia pages for the Moscow International Ballet Competition, which started in 1969, so I'm pretty sure that part is correct, but I can't find anything for an International Dance Festival in Paris in 1969. Do you know what that could be? I also can't see the Boston Globe article without effort; can you? Any chance that's not quite right? I also can't find so just left out the bit about the "All-Union Competition of New Choreographic Numbers"; she certainly had no shortage of awards! --GRuban (talk) 22:29, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's wonderful what you did! Would there be a non-free image for her? - The Boston Globe (that I can see) says "Performing the pas de deux from “Esmeralda,’’ they shared the gold medal at the first International Ballet Competition in Moscow in 1969, the same year that Mikhail Baryshnikov was awarded the gold medal as a solo performer" but may have misinterpreted something. Deepl now often gives me two options but not precisely marking where one ends and the other begins ... easy to be confused. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:07, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A first: two stories about two people who worked together and died the same day - thanks to you. I began the ballet. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:35, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Found an image. Not a great picture as such, fuzzy, could likely be hard to see what she actually looked like, but very romantic. --GRuban (talk) 17:22, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
