Leaving warning with open comments

[edit]

I'm not sure how you are leaving warnings, but your last few have included unclosed comment tags; see here. Unclosed comment tags prevent subsequent warnings from showing up. OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:49, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I see, I'm really sorry. I noticed that you added the subst:Shared IP advice, and I've made a note for myself to use that one from now on, as I didn't know that was it before. I had been copying the source code for the shared IP advice from other talk pages, since I wasn't able to find it on WP:WARN. With the final > in the code it left my signature twice, and I found that removing the > fixed that problem, so I had assumed it was okay. If you'd like I can go through all the warnings I've left and fix it. ^^ Ame 15:55, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't recall using the "shared ip advice" template; that appeared at 2A02:8440:7152:2844:0:44:AFB9:1401&oldid=1279956306's talk page after I closed the comment as it allowed the template you added to render. Generally it's not useful to add multiple templates unless there are multiple issues (e.g., copyright violations and unsourced material). OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:01, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I messed you up with someone else, sorry. I saw that someone had edited the talk page after I went to correct an error in my message, and since I was curious I looked at what they had changed, and they changed something to use subst:shared IP advice instead, so I'm assuming that's the proper template and that they were fixing it. I had forgotten it was someone else and thought it was you, sorry again, haha.
But I understand now, thank you for letting me know. Ame 16:10, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you understand what the "subst" prefix does? It stands for "substitution," and what it does is automatically expands (fully renders) the template after you place it on a page. For example, if you add {{subst:uw-disruptive1}}, the template will automatically render fully in the talk page. It's good practice to always use subst for warning templates (and most other talk templates). OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:17, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I now understand, thank you again. Ame 01:14, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
