Username and userpage

[edit]

Hello, IT GuidePoint Corporation! I'm Perfect4th, a Wikipedia editor who saw your post on your mentor's talk page. I see you've hit some snags with your userpage and you tried to contest its deletion. Wikipedia has a number of policies on corporations and company editing, so let me explain a couple you'll need to know to start to help you out.

  • Wikipedia's username policy doesn't allow usernames representing companies or shared accounts, so you will need to change your username to that of an individual and not share the account. I'll leave a template below explaining more about that.
  • Wikipedia user pages are designed for Wikipedia editors to tell a little bit about themselves and their editing activities (again, individuals, not companies) – userpages that are exclusively promoting companies are not really what userpages are for, and thus eligible for deletion. You should use your userpage to disclose paid editing, as that is required by the Terms of Use.
  • Just so you know in advance, Wikipedia has a lot of policies surrounding paid editing & editing for corporations, as the encyclopedia is not designed for self-promotion. If you're here exclusively to promote your company, you will probably honestly fare better somewhere else.

I'll post the more detailed username template below this, but feel free to ask if you have any questions. Perfect4th (talk) 01:34, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Username details

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "IT GuidePoint Corporation", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually (not your role), such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, service, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. Alternatively, you can just create a new account and use that for editing. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you.

[edit]
Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because it has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia. Also, your username gives the impression that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or website, which is against the username policy.

If you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization, you may request unblock and a username change. In your reasons, you must follow all these steps:

  1. Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement; and
  2. Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked; and
  3. Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked; and
  4. Provide a new username.

To do this, insert the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can search to see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is still available.

Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. plicit 02:42, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I created IT GuidePoint Corporation page to provide basic information, m=not sales or marketing, about the firm. It is not a paid scenario obviously because I have zero experience with the platform other than reading it and looking things up. I am researching information sent to me by Perfect4th so I comply with the platform's guidelines. Please advise if you have actions I should complete to stay in compliance. I own a very small consulting firm called IT GuidePoint Corporation.. On anothers talk page you claim to own the company but now you claim to have not be paid editor? Lavalizard101 (talk) 11:48, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your question. I am new, so the site was just for informational purposes. I do not pay anyone or any firm to edit it, just me. IT GuidePoint Corporation (talk) 12:02, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As the owner of the firm you count as a paid editor when editing about said firm. Also note that Wikipedia articles are not for "informational purposes", as an encyclopedia, a Wikipedia article must summaries what other (reliable) sources say about something and that something must be considered notable. For organisations that WP:NORG which basically means that there must be multiple reliable sources not connected to the company that have written about the company. Lavalizard101 (talk) 12:08, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Now I understand the guidelines. What is the process to get this deleted then?
However, why then are other firms allowed to create pages with Logo and all?
See the page called Guidepoint IT GuidePoint Corporation (talk) 12:12, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Other firms aren't allowed to create their own pages, however due to the volunteer nature of Wikipedia some articles do slip through the cracks, but your example of Guidepoint doesn't appear to have been created by the company itself and does meet the criteria of WP:NORG as the sources are independent of the company. Lavalizard101 (talk) 12:18, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Typically, articles are written by independent editors wholly unconnected with the subject.
If you no longer wish to be unblocked, please say so and we will close your request. 331dot (talk) 16:24, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I am learning the platform and appreciate your insight. What is the process to request an independent source to describe the firm called IT GuidePoint Corporation, or does that just happen organically if it interests someone? How does that work? Can the user name IT GuidePoint Corporation be deleted as well so there is zero confusion on this topic? IT GuidePoint Corporation (talk) 18:20, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Usernames are clearly identified as usernames so that shouldn't be a concern.
There is technically a forum to request that an article be written, but it is backlogged to the point of uselessness. Any request you made would likely not be acted on for some time, if ever. The typical way an article is written is for an independent editor to take note of coverage of a topic in independent reliable sources and then choosing to summarize those sources in an article. A subject trying to force the issue is rarely successful because an article subject typically has different goals and interests than Wikipedia does.
I suggest that you go on about the work of your business as if you had never heard of Wikipedia and allow an article to organically develop as most do. That's the best indicator of notability. Also be advised that there are good reasons to not want an article. Disgruntled customers could vandalize it. Accurate negative information about your company could be in an article about it as long as it appears in an independent source and is not defamatory. Keep these things in mind. Do you still wish to be unblocked? 331dot (talk) 18:42, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thank you for that update. What is the process of deleting the user name IT GuidePoint Corporation or is that already in process? IT GuidePoint Corporation (talk) 19:10, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I may be using the wrong nomenclature. You may call it blocking the user name IT GuidePoint Corporation. Please proceed with blocking that user name. IT GuidePoint Corporation (talk) 19:13, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This username is already blocked. If you don't wish to be unblocked, I will close your unblock request. 331dot (talk) 22:56, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I could be completely wrong, but I still want to bring to your attention that the page for the firm called Guidepoint has been flagged as promotional and nothing was done to remove it. The page is returned in search results. Maybe you could look at it if you have the time. Again, maybe I am wrong. IT GuidePoint Corporation (talk) 12:23, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see no maintenance tags at the top of Guidepoint, unless you are referring to another article.
Even if that is true, we judge each article or draft on its own merits, and not based on the presence of other articles that themselves may be inappropriate and just not yet addressed by a volunteer. There are many ways inappropriate content can be on Wikipedia- standards have changed over time, not all articles have been checked, among other reasons- this cannot justify adding more inappropriate content. 331dot (talk) 12:28, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
