Luis Fernando Villa Álvarez (Spanish: [ˈlwis feɾˈnando ˈβiʝa ˈalβaɾes]), (born 24 December 2000), better known by his online alias Westcol, is a Colombian online streamer, and YouTuber. He became the most followed streamer on Kick in 2024,[6] having risen to fame through his gaming content.[7]
Álvarez has made violent and discriminatory comments against LGBT people[8][9][10] and Latin-American women.[11] A lawyer sued him, and the Constitutional Court of Colombia ordered Álvarez to publish on his social networks a message about the dangers of hate speech and discrimination against LGBT people. The Court also ordered Álvarez to attend trainings on LGBT human rights.[8] Álvarez said he regretted his comments and apologized with LGBT people.[12]
Career
[edit]Villa began his career as a content creator in 2015, uploading videos to YouTube. In 2018, he transitioned to Twitch, where he gained recognition streaming games such as Minecraft and engaging in Just Chatting sessions.[13] By 2023, Villa shifted his primary platform to Kick following Twitch's gambling policy changes.[14]
In a 2022 video Villa made violent and discriminatory remarks about the LGBT people. He said that he would kill his son with seventeen bullets if the boy came out as gay and that he would sexually assault his child with a stick if they came out as transgender.[9][8][10] This comments caused a citizen to sue him. The Constitutional Court of Colombia upheld the plaintiff, and ordered Villa to publish on his social networks a message about the dangers of hate speech and discrimination against LGBT people. The Court also ordered Álvarez to attend trainings on LGBT human rights.[15][16][10][10] It is not known if he has any child.[9][10] Álvarez has apologized and said that those statements were dark jokes.[9]
He also sparked controversy in 2023 after referring to the Colombian city of Ibagué as a "hole" during a livestream. He claimed that Ibagué would never be a significant reference for foreigners and added further disparaging remarks about the city. The comments prompted a public backlash, including from Andrés Hurtado, the mayor of Ibagué, who declared Álvarez a persona non grata.[17] Two lawyers filed legal actions to demand a formal retraction of his statements and called for stricter regulation of online content.[18]
Villa was prohibited from entering El Salvador in 2024 when he attempted to attend Gamergy, a prominent esports and gaming event, after making misogynistic comments during a live stream. He stated, "When I went to El Salvador, I didn’t see any attractive women," sparking significant backlash. Yamil Bukele, the president of the Salvadoran National Sports Institute, announced that Álvarez would not be allowed to attend the event, citing the need to uphold respect and the values promoted by Gamergy.[11] Despite being excluded, Álvarez defended his comments and refused to apologize.[19]
Content focus
[edit]Villa's streams are known for featuring content such as Minecraft, live audience interactions, and real-life events, including his boxing event[20] and participation in the Américas Kings League with his club,[21][22] West Santos FC, alongside Arcángel.[23] He is also known for his casino streams and collaborations with prominent creators like Adin Ross and Sergio Aguero.[24] His charismatic yet controversial approach has attracted a diverse fan base. Villa has collaborated with numerous notable creators in the streaming and entertainment industries. Among his most prominent collaborations is a joint stream with IShowSpeed,[25] a widely popular creator known for his energetic and comedic content. Additionally, Álvarez has a close friendship with Colombian reggaeton artist Blessd,[26] frequently sharing moments with him both online and offline, further blending the worlds of music and streaming.[27]
Music
[edit]W Sound
[edit]In 2024, Álvarez launched a collaborative music project, W Sound, which combined urban music production with rotating collaborations involving prominent artists and producers. Based in Medellín, the project is a partnership between Álvarez and producer Ovy On The Drums, aiming to explore new musical styles within the Latin urban genre.[28] W Sound has been compared to the work of Argentine producer Bizarrap due to its collaborative format and emphasis on visual storytelling. However, it has also drawn criticism for some of its lyrical content.[29][30]
