Question of correct naming and spelling in English, translating Polish

[edit]
Greetings to all! I copy discussion from talk page of --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply hereand also from article Heraldic family. I invite You to discuss this matter to reach consensus.

Infobox image changes

[edit]

User @Sigsjak has recently made a series of edits which have changed how coats of arms of nations are presented in the infoboxes on their pages. In each case the simplest available image, which is typically the escutcheon alone, has been moved to the top of the infobox and other versions of the arms moved down; the effect of this is to give prominence to the escutcheon alone, rather than any full achievement which may exist.

As this is a wide-ranging change I thought it best to open a discussion. The affected pages are:

Burke's and Debrett's - Digital source

[edit]

We've already got links to many old editions of Burke's and Debrett's Peerage through the Internet Archive, Gutenberg, Google Books et al. but these are all scans of physical books. Burke's hasn't actually published for a long time and Debrett's announced in 2019 that future editions will be online only. How shall we get access to these? On their website access requires a paid subscription. Is there anyone in this project group with access? Is there any chance of getting Debrett's added to the Wikipedia Library? Robin S.  You are invited to join the discussion at talk:Kingdom of Prussia § Flags (again), which is within the scope of this WikiProject. The discussion concerns the need for two sets Flags and Coats of Arms in the infobox Cakelot1 ☞️ talk 09:19, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Shades of blue in the Cuban flag

[edit]

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Talk:Republic of Cuba (1902–1959) regarding the shade of blue for the pre-revolution flag. The thread is Shade of blue on the cuba flag. Thank you. Skjoldbro (talk) 09:26, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of arms request for John Laird, Baron Laird

[edit]

Hey folks - big fan of the work you're all doing here. I came to humbly request a free SVG coat of arms for the article on John Laird, Baron Laird. I've put full details in the talk page, including a reference drawing from a non-free source which would be great on the page if adapted as a free SVG. I would be very grateful for any assistance. Many thanks in advance :) PointUnderstander (talk) 00:31, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Official blazons

[edit]

Are unofficial blazons allowed to be put on Wikipedia (as in, blazons that the article editor came up with)? Potatek (talk) 17:19, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say no. While WP:OI allows for the creation of original emblazonments from a blazon, I think WP:OR pretty concretely prohibits blazons from an image. I also think trying to create a blazon from and image is fraught with difficulties and an amateur Wikipedia editor is very liable to get it wrong (e.g. confusing Rampant and salient; or Or with Orange or Copper; etc.). In my opinion, it's not the sort of thing you can trust Wikipedia editors to do. Cakelot1 ☞️ talk 20:01, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What about specifying that they're unofficial blazons? Potatek (talk) 21:19, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I saw the page on the coat of arms of Syria specifying that the blazon was unoffical. Potatek (talk) 21:57, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is that not a good example. It gives a blazon of Tierced in pale vert, argent, and sable, three mullets, and palewise gules; but why not Tierced in pale vert, argent, and sable, three mullets in pale gules or Per pale vert and sable, on a pale argent three mullets in pale gules. If there's no referable blazon that can be included, what's the point of making one up when it isn't even real. Just include a description in plain text when that's all that is citable (or don't include it at all). Cakelot1 ☞️ talk 00:10, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you! Potatek (talk) 11:14, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And a reader to whom the blazon is meaningful can conceive one on their own from the image; unless the reader is blind, or a charge is obscure. —Tamfang (talk) 06:16, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Country data Lebanon, Chehab family flag

[edit]

Should c:File:Chehab family flag.svg be included in {{Country data Lebanon}}? I would argue not, as it can not really be seen as a "Lebanese" flag. The first flag intended to be used as a representation of Lebanese people is the 1918 one (c:File:Cedar flag.svg). Paine Ellsworth asked for consensus before removing the flag. Pinging VNW060222 who had requested its inclusion last year. Nehme1499 15:27, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah maybe you right VNW060222 (talk) 15:51, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
