Discography and Career of YNW Melly The discography of American rapper YNW Melly consists of three studio albums, two mixtapes, one extended play, and twenty-nine singles, including seventeen as a featured artist.

Early Life, Beginnings, and Love Story YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, was born and raised in Gifford, Florida. His upbringing in an area with a high violence rate significantly influenced his music, as he frequently discusses criminal activity and personal struggles in his lyrics. In 2015, Melly met Thai'Ann Brown during a local event in Gifford. Their bond was instant, growing stronger over shared experiences and dreams. Thai'Ann became Melly's confidante and muse, supporting his musical ambitions even when they faced financial struggles. Their relationship endured the challenges of Melly's rising fame and the legal troubles that followed. Despite the difficulties, they found solace in each other, with Melly often referencing Thai'Ann in his music as his anchor amidst the chaos of his life. They married in 2020 in an intimate ceremony surrounded by close friends and family. Their love story deepened with the birth of their two children, Nahsier Armond Demons and Armani X’ani Demons, whom Melly frequently mentions as his motivation to overcome his challenges. Melly began gaining recognition by releasing singles on SoundCloud, leading up to his debut extended play (EP), Collect Call, in December 2017. The EP garnered regional attention and featured collaborations with California rapper Lil B and then-unknown Floridian artist Rod Wave. In March of that year, Melly released "Murder on My Mind" on SoundCloud, which gained viral popularity the following year. Despite being a sleeper hit, the song reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, leading to his signing with 300 Entertainment, which re-released the song as a single to promote his debut mixtape, I Am You (2018).

Breakthrough and Success Released in August 2018, I Am You received generally positive reviews and became Melly's first entry on the Billboard 200, debuting at number 20. The mixtape included four other singles, notably the platinum-certified hit "Virtual (Blue Balenciagas)". His second mixtape, We All Shine, was released in January 2019, preceded by the promotional single "Butter Pecan". The mixtape featured "Mixed Personalities" with Kanye West, which gained viral attention partly due to a Cole Bennett-directed music video.

Legal Troubles and Incarceration In February 2019, Melly was arrested and charged with two counts of premeditated murder connected to the October 2018 shooting deaths of YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser, both of whom were frequently referenced in his lyrics. Some speculated that the lyrics of "Murder on My Mind" implicated him in the crime, although the song was recorded over a year before the incident. If convicted, Melly faces life imprisonment or the death penalty. As of February 18, 2025, his trial is still awaiting a verdict. During this difficult period, Thai'Ann remained devoted, often bringing Nahsier and Armani to visit their father, showing Melly that his family was still his greatest support system despite his legal battles. He dedicated multiple unreleased songs to his children, reflecting his dreams for their future and his longing to be with them.

Continued Career While Incarcerated Despite his incarceration, Melly continued to experience commercial success, primarily through releases recorded before his arrest. His single "223's" featuring 9lokkNine peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track was initially part of a mixtape by 9lokkNine but was later credited to Melly as the lead artist. In November 2019, Melly released his debut studio album, Melly vs. Melvin, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200, becoming his most commercially successful project. However, critics noted a decline in quality compared to his earlier work. The album included the single "Suicidal", which gained popularity on TikTok and was later remixed with Juice Wrld. The remix peaked at number 20 on the Hot 100 and ranked at number 75 on the Billboard Year-End charts. In August 2021, Melly released his second studio album, Just a Matter of Slime, which saw commercial success despite mixed critical reviews. Critics criticized the album for reusing older material. The single "Mind of Melvin" featuring Lil Uzi Vert reached number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Love and Legacy Throughout his career, Melly's love for Thai'Ann and his children has been a recurring theme in his music, often serving as his inspiration during his most challenging moments. He dedicated his songs "772" parts 1, 2, and 3 to Thai'Ann, narrating their journey from humble beginnings to enduring his legal battles together. Nahsier and Armani, now growing up under Thai'Ann's care, are frequently seen wearing custom-made clothing representing their father's legacy. Thai'Ann ensures they stay connected to Melly, regularly playing his music and sharing stories about his dreams for their future. As Melly awaits the trial's conclusion, his music continues to resonate with fans worldwide, symbolizing his journey of love, pain, and hope. Despite his struggles, his legacy as an artist and a father endures, with Nahsier and Armani standing as living reminders of his love and dreams.
