Climate change in Saxony-Anhalt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Climate change in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt affects various environments and industries.

Greenhouse gas emissions

[edit]

Greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 28,600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2022.[1]

Impacts of climate change

[edit]

Forests

[edit]

By 2019, 15,000 hectares of forest were lost in Saxony-Anhalt due to more frequent extreme weather, higher temperatures and reduced rainfall.[2]

Response

[edit]

In February 2019, the state released a "Climate and Energy Concept", which would reduce emissions in the state to 55% of the 1990 level.[3]

As of 2023, very few municipalities had plans to deal with droughts, heat, heavy rain and floods.[4] In 2023, the state government announced funding to support municipalities in adapting to climate change, providing for subsidies for the construction of water storage facilities.[5] As of 2025, dams in Saxony-Anhalt are being prepared for the effects of climate change, by preventing algae from being able to form on the surface of water.[6]

Funding for the expansion of cycle paths was cut.[7]

The Saxony-Anhalt Greens have said that state climate protection legislation should be passed.[8]
