Until now, everyone used to make her feel that she looked very ordinary and ugly, but today her personality got a new shine and it was because of a person standing beside her, Dr. Anil Nerurkar! Along with Dr. Naik, Dr. Nerurkar was involved in implementing innovative educational initiatives for children in rural areas of Sindhudurg district. He set up a mobile laboratory, 'Science on Wheels', which took science lessons directly to children in their schools, at his own expense, and also appointed trained science teachers. With the phenomenal success of this initiative, Dr. Nerurkar easily moved on to bigger goals. He was a well-known obstetrician and gynecologist in Philadelphia. But he decided to use both his expertise in the medical field and the money earned from it to achieve his goal.

Dr. Nerurkar came to his native village, Kudal in Konkan, with the intention of doing something substantial about the health issues of rural women. Nevertheless, he did not give up and started an anti-tobacco awareness campaign on a two-wheeler. In this innovative campaign, in the north and south areas of Kudal taluka, people's oral health is checked by going door-to-door on two scooters with six colleagues. The team needs a few things like disposable gloves, some equipment, and a good battery for testing. Based on this material alone, he kept a record of thousands of villagers by examining them. This campaign proved to be very effective in ensuring timely diagnosis of this deadly disease.

Dr. Nerurkar himself provides inspirational guidance to the new generation in these workshops and camps. The Institute of Human Resource Development, Mumbai, runs a nursing training center at Anav village in Kudal taluka. In March 2017, the doctors conducted an innovative workshop for the girl students that would be very useful in their day-to-day activities. The entire workshop was designed in such a way that it would be very useful for these students in their daily nursing work. He spoke to each of them separately. He also interacted freely with the doctors who spoke to him affectionately, both as mentors and as friends. He gave guidance on how to communicate with the doctors and patients with whom they are working or will continue to work. He instilled in these young nurses the truth that any disease of the patient can be cured by 50% if they have a cheerful and positive attitude while undergoing treatment. As usual in this workshop, he also emphasized the importance of proper knowledge of the English language in today's time. Dr. Nerurkar set a goal, and that is to make Sindhudurg district cancer-free! He travels from the US to India twice every year, investing his valuable time and money in making this goal a reality. It is special that every initiative he has run so far has been made from his own earnings!

In order to bring about social transformation, it is very important not only to think about the problems but also to inculcate the qualities of self-reliance, good education, and patriotism in the next generation. During his visits to India, he visits several schools in Sindhudurg and interacts with students there. At that time, their main focus is on self-confidence and mastery over English. He urges children to read the history of our saints and freedom fighters. Doctors are confident that the younger generation will play an important role in making Sindhudurg district tobacco-free.

Creating good and responsible citizens from children will lead to a proper social system. The so-called doctors have so far directly interacted with more than one hundred thousand children through various small and large seminars. They are not interested in lecturing in front of a very large audience. According to them, if they communicate with more than a hundred children at a time, it often becomes one-sided. It is not possible to understand every child's mind. They believe that if there is a small group, direct communication and exchange of ideas can be done effectively. Therefore, even though it is difficult to calculate the time, doctors prefer to talk to a small group of children. They say that the receptivity of young children is strong. They prefer to avoid talking about topics that are completely new to them. It is their job to guide them and direct them in the right direction. They keep telling them that they should adopt new ideas, new options, and modern technology. They show them how to use the internet, how to use social media for good, to stay connected with the world. Marathi is our mother tongue and we should be proud of it, but they also want to make them understand how important it is to know English as a global language. When asked whether the efforts they are making are successful, the doctor laughs and says, "I have been doing this work for the last several years. The results will be visible."
