Ari Piispanen (born September 17, 1962, Imatra, Finland) is a Finnish mechanical engineer, inventor and entrepreneur.
Early life and education
[edit]Piispanen was born in Imatra, Finland. He studied mechanics at the School of Mechanics from 1978 to 1980, and then pursued further studies in mechanical engineering with a specialization in construction from 1980 to 1984.
Career
[edit]Piispanen began his career working as a student and young engineer at Enso-Gutzeit Paper Mill Kaukopää (currently known as Stora Enso) from 1980 to 1986. From 1986 to 1989, he worked as a construction engineer in Teollisuussuunnittelu Oy.
Piispanen is a prolific inventor with over 60 patents to his name. His first invention was a fully automatic gem grinding machine, which he designed and implemented himself. It was used for years in the production of Kalevala Jewelry.
In 1989, Piispanen founded his first company, Konetuote Piispanen Oy. The company established a floor tile production line in 1991 and a cardboard flat rack production line in 1993. In 1994, Piispanen invented an automatic machine that can prepare electric resistance. In 1996, he developed a more efficient cutting and molding line for aluminum. He also invented an apparatus for preparing batteries in 1998.
In 1999, Piispanen invented a specialized type of brewery equipment and founded Saimaan Panimo Oy (Saimaan Juoma tehdas), which was later acquired by the Hartwall family.
Piispanen has founded or co-founded several other companies, including Rotatek Oy (acquired by Vacon Oy), Axco-Motors (acquired by Danfoss), Visedo Oy (acquired by Danfoss[1]), UniqAir Oy (acquired by the Paulig and Kiikka family), Afstor Oy, Elstor Oy, and Soletair Power.
Recognition
[edit]In 2020, Piispanen was honored as the "Holder of the Lappeenranta Fortress" by the city of Lappeenranta.[2]
Personal life
[edit]Piispanen describes himself as sociable and open. He is the father of three adult children.
