The Aston Martin AM04 engine is a naturally aspirated, four-stroke, 6.0-liter, V12 racing engine, made by Aston Martin for use in various race cars, from 2005–2011.[1][2] The AM04 used in the race cars is modified from the engine used in the Aston Martin DB9 road car.
Design
[edit]The AM04 utilizes a crossflow design in its aluminium alloy cylinder heads to give better engine performance and uses a Pectel engine control unit mated to an Xtrac gearbox.[3] The engine is constructed using forged steel crankshaft with 7 main bearings and steel connecting rod. The firing order of the AM04 is, with A as left bank of the cylinders: 1A, 6B, 5A, 2B, 3A, 4B, 6A, 1B, 2A, 5B, 4A, 3B.[1]
The DBR9 was fitted with two, 31.2 mm (1.23 in) inlet restrictors while the B09/60 (DBR 1-2) was fitted with a 47.8 mm (1.88 in) inlet restrictor.[3][4] The LMP1 cars utilized a larger intake due to using a GT1 production based engine in a prototype.[4]
A concern to the usage of the AM04 in a prototype, was that its cylinder angle of 60°, is tight, which moved the center of gravity of the engine higher.[5]
