"Fill Her Up" is a song by the English musician Sting from his 1999 album Brand New Day.
Composition and lyrics
[edit]The song is about a filling station attendant who is in love with a woman in the passenger seat of a car, but the man driving is protective and doesn't want the attendant to talk to the woman, so the attendant makes up scenarios in his head. As Sting told American magazine Billboard about the song: "this poor young guy, played by James Taylor, has all sorts of larcenous, hot-blooded scenarios in his head, and his whole interior life gets played out as he goes down this angry path-until he suddenly sees the light. Meanwhile, the listener is sympathetic, because when you're young and love is new, you can exhaust the very idea of love-or lust-in your own head before a single real thing ever occurs!"[5]
Reception
[edit]AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine called It a tribute to American country singer Lyle Lovett.[6] As of May 2025, the song has become one of Sting's least streamed tracks, having over 1.6 million streams on the Swedish music streaming service Spotify, being his 203rd most streamed song.[7]
