Dr. Hooman Oktaei is an endocrinologist and diabetes specialist. He has contributed to significant research in diabetes prevention, particularly through his work on the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and its long-term follow-up, the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS).The Economic Report has reported total annual cost of diabetes in 2022 is $412.9 billion and prevention of diabetes mellitus as one of main works of Dr. Oktaei can have a huge impact. One of his notable studies, titled "Effect of Metformin and Lifestyle Interventions on Mortality in the Diabetes Prevention Program and Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study," was published in 2021. This research aimed to determine whether metformin or lifestyle modification could lower rates of all-cause and cause-specific mortality among adults at high risk for type 2 diabetes. The study found that, over a median of 21 years, metformin did not significantly reduce mortality rates compared to placebo. However, lifestyle interventions were associated with a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer, highlighting the long-term benefits of lifestyle changes in diabetes prevention. Dr. Oktaei's expertise in endocrinology and diabetes is further demonstrated by his board certifications in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, as well as his academic background from the University of Tennessee. His research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in preventing type 2 diabetes and improving long-term health outcomes.
