I Am Zero from Perth, Western Australia, circa 2015.

I Am Zero is an Australian metalcore band from Perth, Western Australia, active from approximately 2014 to 2015. The band was notable for its blend of metalcore and nu-metal influences, and for featuring vocalist Bryant Best, formerly of the band Saviour. They released their debut EP, Dark Sky, through the prominent Australian independent record label, UNFD.

History

[edit]

I Am Zero was formed in 2014 by vocalist Bryant Best following the dissolution of his previous band, Saviour. Best, a figure in the Perth heavy music scene, sought to create a new musical outlet. He recruited Michael Barr on bass and vocals, Urvin Seeburuth on guitar, and Michael Matta on drums to complete the lineup.[1]

The band quickly began writing and recording material, aiming for a sound that incorporated the intensity of metalcore with elements of nu-metal and post-hardcore. Their debut single, "The Winter Sun," was released in July 2014, followed by their extended play (EP), Dark Sky, which was digitally released in January 2015. Both releases were distributed through UNFD, an independent record label based in Melbourne, Australia.[2][3][4]

In an interview, bassist/vocalist Michael Barr stated that vocalist Bryant Best had sent their initial songs to Unified (the parent company of UNFD), and they were "really interested in representing us." Barr described the offer as "a pretty good offer, one that you couldn't really refuse. It's one of the biggest labels in Australia at the moment coming to you wanting to help you out, so we were stoked on that."[5]

Following the release of Dark Sky, I Am Zero performed locally within the Perth heavy music scene, gaining some attention for their live performances and the EP's sound.[6]

The band's activity appears to have ceased around late 2015, with no further releases or public announcements of a hiatus or breakup. The reasons for their disbandment are not publicly known.[7]

Musical style and influences

[edit]

I Am Zero's musical style has been characterized as metalcore with strong nu-metal leanings. Their sound featured aggressive vocals, often incorporating both screams and clean singing, alongside heavy guitar riffs and prominent basslines. The band's influences reportedly included contemporary metalcore acts as well as early 2000s nu-metal bands.[8]
