Jonathan Shank is an American producer of live entertainment and an artist manager. He founded, and is CEO of, Terrapin Station Entertainment, a company that manages artists and produces entertainment events.[1] Terrapin and Sony Music Masterworks formed a partnership in 2020.[2][3]

Shank also hosts the music industry podcast "The Jam."[4]

He is the creator of family-friendly touring franchises such as Disney Junior Dance Party on Tour, The Fresh Beat Band Live, and Peppa Pig Live!.[5] He has collaborated with members of the Grateful Dead and the Bob Marley estate as well as many other prominent artists, and with properties such as American Idol.

Shank is known for his adapting for family entertainment the touring business model associated with jam bands – "strategic touring in volume," or evolving a live act into an ongoing experience.[6] As a producer and music manager he is known for his work with American Idol winner Maddie Poppe, Victoria Justice, Coco Jones, members of the Grateful Dead,[7] and others. He managed Mickey Hart's Global Drum Project whose album won a Grammy award in 2008.

Early career

[edit]

Shank was born November 8, 1975 and grew up in Hatboro, Pennsylvania. He has cited a Jackson 5 concert he attended in 1984 with his parents as deeply impacting him and touching off his career path in live entertainment.[8]

Shank attended Tulane University, and interned at House of Blues New Orleans and for producer Kim Fowley. In 1997 he left New Orleans for Los Angeles and began working at booking agency American Artists,[9] where he was the agent for many artists including Jefferson Starship, The Marshall Tucker Band, Robby Krieger, and Dave Mason.

He ran American Artists, beginning at age 22, from 1999 to 2001.

Artist Management, Mickey Hart Collaboration

[edit]

Shank worked as an artist manager at several agencies before forming Terrapin Entertainment. These included Avenue Management Group and Direct Management. Starting in 2009 he worked at Azoff, Geary, Paul Management,[10] where he managed artists including Paul Oakenfold and Eve.

During this period he also managed Mickey Hart[11] and Bill Kreutzmann, the Disco Biscuits, Particle, and War.[12]

With Hart, Shank put together the Mickey Hart Band, Hydra, and the Rhythm Devils. The Global Drum Project that he managed,[13] which included Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo, won the Grammy award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2008.[14]

In the 2000s he produced events for Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.[15]

Red Light Management

[edit]

From 2010 to 2020 Shank led the family entertainment division at Red Light Management.[16]. Initially the company was mostly an artist management firm. It began to evolve when, with a live performance by the Fresh Beat Band,[17] Shank initiated what became extensive production of family and children's entertainment tours starring brands such as Peppa Pig.

At Red Light he worked with or managed artists including Maddie Poppe, Alejandro Aranda (Scarypoolparty), MAGIC!, Sam Tsui, Tal Wilkenfeld, Victoria Justice, Aly & AJ, Ashley Tisdale, and Coco Jones.

In 2019 and 2020 Shank received three Pollstar Award nominations.[2]

In 2018 he began to work with the rebooted American Idol. He managed and launched the careers of finalists and winners, including Idol winner Maddie Poppe.[18]

Terrapin Station Entertainment

[edit]

In 2020 Shank left Red Light Management and formed Terrapin Station Entertainment. After two months, the new venture partnered with Sony Music Masterworks, with the label acquiring a majority stake.[19] Members of his Red Light roster who came with him to Terrapin included Scarypoolparty, Maddie Poppe, Victoria Justice, Laura Marano, and Sam Tsui.[20]

Shank continues to produce large family events. In 2022–23 he produced a 250-show run of Disney Junior Live on Tour. Other entertainment properties to which he has applied his strategy of evolving a brand into an ongoing live experience include Gracies Corner Live and Deal or No Deal Live.[16]

In 2020 Shank received the T.J. Martell Foundation's Trailblazer Award.[21]

In the 2020s Shank directed and produced The Bob Marley One Love Experience, an exhibit that ran in Los Angeles, Toronto, and London.[22] In 2024 he curated a showing of art by Mickey Hart at a “Dead Forever Experience” in Las Vegas.[23]

Expansion into sports venues, The Jam podcast

[edit]

In 2022 Terrapin Station Entertainment launched a sports division. This wing of the company books concerts by prominent artists such as Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks into major-league venues, aiming to help the resident teams as well as the artists. In 2023 the sports division expanded from National Football League and Major League Baseball franchises to take in Major League Soccer teams as well.[24]

In 2023, Terrapin acquired Black Ink Presents, a production services company.

Shank is a frequent guest on podcasts and other media[7][25] [26][20] sharing his expertise in producing large-venue live music and family-oriented entertainment events.[27]

In 2024, Shank himself began hosting a new Osiris Media podcast called The Jam. His first-season guests included Robby Krieger, Billy Cobham, Randy Jackson, Disco Biscuits, Dave Mason, Dean Budnick, and Bill Payne. A second season launched in September 2024.[28]

Shank has produced charity concerts such as tributes to Otis Redding, Linda Ronstadt, and Ray Manzarek, as well as benefit concerts for Homeward Bound in Los Angeles.[29]
