Dr. Nikhil D. Datar is an Indian obstetrician, gynaecologist, and health rights activist based in Mumbai. He is renowned for his clinical expertise in managing high-risk pregnancies and for his advocacy in reforming India's reproductive healthcare laws, particularly the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act. Dr. Datar played a pivotal role in extending the legal abortion limit from 20 to 24 weeks in India.[1][2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Dr. Datar earned his MBBS and MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from KEM Hospital, Mumbai. He further obtained qualifications including DGO, DNB, FCPS, FICOG, and a Diploma in Hospital Administration. In 2009, he was awarded the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship by the UK's Department of Health.[3]

Medical career

[edit]

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Datar practices at Cloudnine Hospital in Malad, Mumbai, and also consults at Lifewave Hospital and Yashada Maternity & Nursing Home.[3][4] He specializes in high-risk obstetrics, complex deliveries, and minimally invasive gynaecological surgeries, including laparoscopic procedures for fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.[3]

Dr. Datar has served as a postgraduate teacher at R. N. Cooper Hospital and held consultant positions at Nanavati Hospital and Hinduja Healthcare Surgical Hospital.[4]

[edit]

Dr. Datar is a prominent advocate for patient rights and reproductive justice. In 2008, he filed a landmark petition challenging the 20-week abortion limit under the MTP Act, following a case where a woman was compelled to carry a fetus with severe abnormalities to term.[1] His sustained legal efforts contributed to the 2021 amendment of the MTP Act, which extended the permissible abortion period to 24 weeks in specific cases.[2]

In 2023, Dr. Datar became the first individual in Mumbai to notarize a "living will," advocating for the right to a dignified death and raising awareness about end-of-life choices.[5]

Public engagement and recognition

[edit]

Dr. Datar actively engages with the public through social media platforms and educational content.[6] His wife, Dr. Smita Datar, authored a Marathi book titled Fakt Tichyasaathi ("Only For Her"), chronicling his 14-year campaign to reform abortion laws in India.[2]
