Dr. Uma Shankar Prasad (Nepali: डा.उमा शंकर प्रसाद) is a Nepali economist and academic. He serves as an Associate Professor at the Central Department of Economics, Tribhuvan University.[1] He has held public appointments, including as a member of the National Planning Commission of Nepal[2] and Chairperson of the Health Insurance Board. He also serves as the Chairman of Kalkiism Research and Training Center (KRTC), a think-tank based in Kathmandu. KRTC has been advocating for Karmaism, a complete shift in socio-economic landscape of the world.

Early life and education

Prasad was born in then Sakhuwa Village Development Committee-4 (Now Madhav Narayan Municipality-3), Rautahat District, in Madhesh Province, Nepal. He completed a Master of Arts in Economics at Tribhuvan University. He later obtained an MPhil and PhD from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. His doctoral research examined the effects of economic reforms in Nepal on public finance and poverty.

Academic and professional career

Prasad began his academic career at the Centre for Economic Development and Administration (CEDA), Tribhuvan University, in 2000. He later joined the Central Department of Economics as an Associate Professor.[3] In addition to teaching, he has supervised postgraduate and doctoral research in economics.

From 2018 to 2020, he was Chairperson of the Health Insurance Board, Nepal.[4] He has also served as a Member of the National Planning Commission of Nepal during two terms (2019–2022 and 2024). [5] [6]
