Oppose. No evidence is presented that his name is overwhelmingly styled this way in reliable sources. Daniel Webster appears more often than Dan Webster in the article's references by a factor of more than 2:1. (I mainly scanned the reference titles; I'm aware of headlines.) Some of the references that use Dan in the title user a mix of both and show a preference for Daniel. For example, his official US House page has an "About Daniel" heading and when you click "More About Daniel" the subhead for his biography includes "About Dan" but then he's referred to as Daniel twice, and never Dan, in the biography. His Congressional bio, campaign website, and several news sources[1][2][3] also use Daniel, reflecting a mix of official and reliable news sources. Even the guidance at WP:CONCISE states: Exceptions exist for biographical articles. For example, given names and family names are usually not omitted or abbreviated for the purposes of concision.WP:NCBIO further calls for using full first and last name in most cases. WP:HYPOCORISM provides guidance on how to style hypocorism when used but not any special considerations for when to use them, so the default is to other general considerations.--MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk00:16, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. "Dan Webster" should redirect to either Daniel Webster or Daniel Webster (disambiguation), as it does now. The former is an important figure in American history, and there are several other notable persons called Daniel or Dan Webster, in addition to the fact that this person seems to be called "Daniel" more often than "Dan". I can certainly imagine readers being ASTONISHED to find a Florida congressman when they search for "Dan Webster"; while I can't guarantee that they'll all be aware of the historical figure, I expect most who arrive there would understand why after seeing that article.
