Video game usage
[edit]The following was moved from the article text: olivier July 2, 2005 19:08 (UTC)
- In popular MMORPG's whenever someone gains a level or rank. So if they achieve the 45th level of their character they will say, "Ding 45!" This is usually followed by everyone who sees the message congratulating them in ways such as "Woot, way to go, gratz".
- It was invented from the game EverQuest which has a "ding" sound effect everytime someone gains enough experience for the next level. The first person to use this was Xenzu in 1999 on the Erollisi Marr EverQuest server.
