Dexy's Midnight Runners
[edit]It is indeed ironic that a British pop group have to mention Ms O'Brien as an Irish intellectual to counter anti-Irish prejudice, when the Irish government themselves demonstrated their prejudice by banning her books. I can't imagine that the British (against whom this accusation of prejudice is presumably levelled) are unaware of the wealth of literary talent from Ireland. Neither did their government ban her books. My comments along these lines are regularly deleted, so perhaps some Oirish person has an axe to grind. I wonder why this pop group selected Edna O'Brien in preference to say, Oscar Wilde, Bernard Shaw or, if they've heard of him, Sebastian Barry. Incidentally, Ms O'Brien chooses to live in London, so I doubt if she has a problem with the British. Ausseagull (talk) 21:09, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
I am now deleting the reference. Ausseagull (talk) 18:30, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Whose problems, exactly?
[edit]Innocently meant, I'm sure, but the article begins with saying that O'Brien's works address "the inner feelings of women, and their problems in relating to men and to society as a whole."
This rather makes it sound as if women are the ones with problems, while men and society are just fine; I doubt whether O'Brien had that in mind.
Since I may be oversensitive, I thought I'd post this on Discussion rather than edit the article at once. Any thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.66.85.99 (talk) 20:02, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Year of birth
[edit]WP speak with forked tongue. We have her being born in 1930 in the lede, but in Category:1932 births.
Answers.com has a bet each way.
Googling "edna o’brien 1930" gets 141,000 hits; "edna o’brien 1932" has 117,000. 1936 comes in third, with 23,000 hits. Not much help there. In all those refs, there doesn’t seem to be any discussion of the disparity between these dates, or any attempt to arrive at the truth. So, here we are. Edna O’Brien’s time has come. Is there an authoritative document that puts this matter to rest, and gives us her exact date of birth, whatever it is? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 02:55, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Edna O'Brien
[edit]The article about this author omits all information about films. She wrote 15 screenplays. This number includes some screenplays which she did not write but were based on her novels. For example Girl with Green Eyes (1963) starring Peter Finch & Rita Tushingham was based on Edna O'Brien's novel The Lonely Girl.
By the way, there is a TV documentary about Edna O'Brien at 2230 on BBC 1 on Sunday 7 July 2019 Kirby Steve (talk) 16:03, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
