Change natural science to Applied science . Vrankyrule (talk) 10:06, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- What is the justification for this? "Natural science" is a standard term to include physics, chemistry etc but "Applied science" is a very limited. I will oppose this change unless you can provide a strong justification. Ldm1954 (talk) 12:17, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

Changes to ENGINEERING Page
[edit]I am currently working with the department head of industrial engineering at NCSU. Since this page was created using a UK textbook, it does not include a section on industrial engineering (whether it is just industrial engineering or industrial and systems engineering – they're essentially the same thing) or other disciplines. Add source(s) to this page so that IE/ISE and other missing engineering disciplines are included. The department head recommended ASEE as a source (https://www.asee.org/).
Here is the list of all engineering disciplines (with links to their wiki pages) acknowledged by the ASEE:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Agricultural Engineering
- Architectural Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science (not technically an engineering but for most universities the CS department is housed within their college of engineering)
- Electrical Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
- Mining Engineering
- Nuclear Engineering
- Petroleum Engineering
Also, having a 'main branches of engineering' section and then an 'other branches of engineering' section is redundant - just have 1 section called 'types of engineering' or 'engineering disciplines'. This would make the article flow better and shine a light on the "sub-disciplines" so that people who are contemplating studying engineering have all options laid out for them, not just the big 4 (mechanical, chemical, electrical, and civil). The current format limits prospective student's options and does not allow current engineers or students to learn about other disciplines which restricts their knowledge and their ability to solve problems. Having multi-disciplinary knowledge is priceless because engineering problems are very parallel, we are all solving essentially the same thing just with different inputs or different goals.
I’d love for this to open a discussion, so please reply and we can collaborate. Also, if anyone knows of another quality source or other engineering disciplines that can and should be added to this page please reply. Curchick (talk) 16:04, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- One small thing, the relevant current link is Materials Engineering, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is a journal, I think the ASEE term is incorrect.
- Back to your post, the BIG problem with this page is that many have added their pet "engineering", see List of engineering branches. It is a mess, and while Ambndms, Reidgreg and myself tried to do some rationalization, I at least gave up. I tried to clean it up by doing AfD/PROD on a few that I considered to be irrelevant, and managed with Civionics but failed for a few others, so gave up on that too. The term "Engineering" has been used in faaaaaaar too many pages, see this ugly list.
- If you have a good suggestion about how to clean this mess I would be interested. Ldm1954 (talk) 16:36, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
