Merging Sections

[edit]

I strongly think that the sections Music, Dance Forms(Dont rem correct naming) and Vallamkali could be merged into one sections....Users pls feel free to give ur opinions.....

ARUNKUMAR P.RTalk 10:47, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interested users, pls see the Tamil people article, which is a FA article.....

Many sections of Malayali page can be merged to a common sections titled Culture., For eg Communities, Martial arts , cusine, architecture, Dance forms and Vallam kali.A new section named Etymology should be started which dicusses the origin of name malayalee....Language and Literature sub section must be added under Culture section....And details about various Malayali organizations should be added.....

So fellow users, pls help ...We can make this article an FA........:-)

ARUNKUMAR P.RTalk 16:43, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish History

[edit]

Am a bit disappointed with the Jewish History here, cant understand the logic of the person who edited this.

1. Jews getting converted to Christians ( I dont know any, never have I read in any secular sources. All the sources provided here are catholic). Since no jews are left here to oppose. 2. Negev : Hmm.. again a huge mistake .. Negev is a desert.. 80% of Negev belongs to Israeli military. The lone nuclear reactor of Israel is in Negev. The inhabitants of present Negev are muslim bedouins. The malayali jewish community lives in the Southern city of Israel called Eilat. They are called Cochinis there.

Negev:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negev

Please remove this unwarranted lines, claiming convesion of Jews to Christianity. Fyodor7 (talk) 08:48, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers in the infobox

[edit]

The number of Malayalees in other countries is no where near the actual number of Malayalees in those area. The reference talks about the number of emigrants in 2007, and is not the actual number of Malayalees. Hence, I would be removing those figures soon. I request editors to pitch in here, with valid sources about the total number of Malayalees. Cheers, Aarem (Talk) 04:54, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to this website, the reports from the sixth Migration Survey should be available in just a few more months. --Joshua Issac (talk) 15:54, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But still, there is a problem. The migration survey covers only the Keralites who has migrated to other countries for employment or business. It is not covering the citizens who are living abroad since generations.
For eg; many countries like Singapore, Canada etc have Indians/Malayalis who are citizens of that country since generations. Their population figures will not be covered in a survey which is primarily based on recent migration trends and remittances.
Thus this migration figure will be projecting a population figure which is actually lesser than the total number of Malayalis in those countries.

Order of hindu communities listed

[edit]

The hindu communities among Malayalis are currently listed with Kshatriya and Brahman at the beginning and Ezhava and Pulaya at the end. The only reason I can think of for this particular order is caste privilege and status. In my opinion, we should not be perpetuating caste privilege with wikipedia. So, I suggest the hindu communities be ordered alphabetically. I understand this is only my personal opinion and so I am not changing it right now but if enough of you agree with me, I hope that the enlightened editors of this page will make the necessary change.

Malayali Community in Malaysia & Singapore

[edit]

I believe that the figure given for the Malayali population in Malaysia (10,636)is innacurate. In reality it is estimated to be in the region of about 300,000. Likewise, the figure provided for Singapore (7,800) is also likely to be incorrect.

Don't panic; a discussion will now take place over on Commons about whether to remove the file. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion, although please review Commons guidelines before doing so.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.

Plural

[edit]

Why does the article say that the plural of Malayali is Malayalikal? I know the plural in Malayalam is that, but the plural form of Malayali in English is never referred to as Malayalikal; it's referred to as anglicized Malayalis only. Even in this talk page many people refer to the plural form as Malayalis. - Aurorion (talk) 12:56, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Changes made. Achayan (talk) 10:27, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are the "Malaiyali" in this photo of this same group?

[edit]

Can anyone verify if this photo is indeed of this same group described in the article? If so, Malaiyali should be made as a redirect to this article, and this photo would be a great addition to the History section. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:23, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The picture description itself says it's a few tribals found Tamilnadu. If they are Keralites in origin or not can't be ascertained without sufficient support from source. --AshLey Msg 14:22, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

A Roman Catholic Fanatic Idiot is trying to add Alphonsa and Chavara to this page. Please think what is their eligibility to be included in this page. Please include those guys in the church portal. Those who are shown here are outstanding persons in their field. WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY OF ALPHONA AND CHAVARA?. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.245.101.26 (talk) 13:26, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know the "idiot" who added Chavara and Alphonsa earlier. But I am adding Chavara now as he is a social reformer of Kerala (as per Kerala government records) who lived even before the times of Narayana Guru. Also a Syrian Catholic saint. And as you told Alphonsa do not deserve a spot in this page. Achayan (talk) 10:14, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thiyya page forwarding to Ezhava page

[edit]

Currently Thiyya page is forwarded to Ezhava page. Why not a separate article for Thiyya as they have more things to describe in detail? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pnranjith (talkcontribs) 14:14, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is being discussed at Talk:Ezhava, as you well know. It has nothing to do with this article. So drop it, please. - Sitush (talk) 18:16, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Community Section

[edit]

Either the community page needs a serious revision or needs to be taken off by just keeping links to the various communities in Kerala. Anything which is lesser would be disrespecting the said community. Order of community as per the arrival to Kerala would be acceptable, if at all. Almithra (talk) 06:31, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete the section: I propose a delete of community section from this page. None of the other similar pages doesn't have a community section included. Please refer Tamilian or Kannadiga pages. Athachil (talk) 06:31, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: There is nothing wrong in mentioning the various communities. But it needs to be cleaned. Content without citations should be deleted. Otherwise come up with references to support the given content.Achayan (talk) 10:24, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Add more columns.

[edit]

there should be more columns in the malayali page. there are more malayali people to be added. much more!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.193.219.190 (talk) 14:22, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lakshadweep Malayalis

[edit]

I guess Malayalam speakers of Lakshadweep should be added to the list of Malayalis. Ethnically, there is not much difference between a Malayali from Lakshadweep and that of Kerala. There is a vague reference to the same under Geographic Distribution and Population, but details have not been included in the intro as well as the infobox. Even Oxford Dictionary defines a Malayali as someone who speaks Malayalam. Also, I think, we should remove references where a Malayali and Keralite are used interchangeably. I hope, someone who is knowledgeable enough will add the necessary details. Muhd. Shanu KoyakuttyTalk 18:44, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Montage images

[edit]

There are several non-free images being used in the montage and that use is not allowed under our non-free media policy. Under NFCI#10 it specifically allows Pictures of deceased persons, in articles about that person, provided that ever obtaining a free close substitute is not reasonably likely but these uses are not the subjects own article. Also some of these image have no fair use rationale. In the meantime you should search for freely licenced images for this article if you think you really need images of those people. ww2censor (talk) 09:58, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Some images in the montage have been changed but there are now 5 non-free images being used. Please replace them with freely licenced images. The following must be replaced or removed and will be removed unless they are substituted: Dharma Raja, VK Krishna Menon, Vallathol Narayana Menon, Devan Nair and Prem Nazir. ww2censor (talk) 22:59, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Now that no one has bothered to remove and/or replace the non-free image in the montage for more than two months, I am going to remove them myself. If you do add new image please make sure they are freely licenced. They should be plenty of freely licenced image available. ww2censor (talk) 17:20, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for the deletion of all the galleries of personalities from the articles about ethnic groups

[edit]

Seemingly there is a significant number of commentators which support the general removal of infobox collages. I think there is a great opportunity to get a general agreement on this matter. It is clear that it has to be a broad consensus, which must involve as many editors as possible, otherwise there is a big risk for this decision to be challenged in the near future. I opened a Request for comment process, hoping that more people will adhere to this proposal. Please comment here. TravisRade (talk) 23:05, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is not an RfC and it doesn't follow the RfC process. It's just a collection of opinions and has no authority. Liz Read! Talk! 23:17, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Malayali

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Malayali's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Malayali Diaspora

[edit]

The Malayalis spread across the world form a subset of the Indian diaspora, but they are not always distributed in the same proportions. There are numerous localised concentrations of South Asians in the UK, but they commonly have mainly people from one region or smaller locality of origin. For example in London there are many Malayalis in Newham (East Ham and West Ham) which used to host a large Jewish community, and more in Croydon. This may be a temporary phenomenon, as immigrant communities in the UK tend to relocate after a generation or two. There are also Malayali cultural institutions: churches (of all kinds), temples (e.g. for Sri Narayana Guru's followers), arts organisations, newspapers and websites. I know much less about the USA, but believe there is a large community in New York. Is the Catholicos of the East still based there? Study of the ancient Syriac language is also carried out in the US by Kerala Christians. There is of course a large Malayali presence in the Persian Gulf. Earlier there were large Malayali communities in Ceylon, Singapore and Malaya. Pogroms led by Buddhist monks and Ayurvedic doctors led many to escape (along with the Tamils) from Ceylon in the 1950s. These matters are probably not of much interest in Kerala itself. Someone with access to the expatriate newspapers (which are in both English and Malayalam) may be able to give an up-to-date account of the Malayali diaspora. NRPanikker (talk) 04:26, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I may add a personal observation, that the British-born children of parents from Kerala seem to be taller, on average, than children brought up in Kerala, and American-born Malayalis seem to be taller still. I presume that this reflects childhood nutrition rather than illness: a more "military" diet? Malayalis were not included among the "martial races" of the British Raj. This may be true of Indians in general. I will look to see if distinct growth charts have been compiled for Indian children living abroad. NRPanikker (talk) 04:49, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
