Thoughts on expansion
[edit]Should be expanded to include a little paragraph on each sculpture, with information on when it was commissioned, and also about who funded it if other than NYC. An excerpt of the most known sculptures should be included into Central Park, with a reference to this list. Bjelleklang - talk 15:16, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
I would personally like to see more pictures of the sculptures. I think more images of the statues would greatly improve this page.--Jonthecheet 04:17, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
On Merging
[edit]Merging is a terrible idea. The Statues and Sculptures in New York City is embarrassingly underpopulated and, at this point, useless. The List of sculptures in Central Park is much healthier and should stay as far away from that other article as possible. --Knulclunk 03:58, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
A note on the Alice sculpture
[edit]It may not be worth noting, but FYI to the editors of this article: the Alice sculpture has a typo in the verse of "Jabberwocky" inscribed around it -- it says "borogroves" instead of "borogoves". (It's the actual sculpture that has the typo, not this article.) Mike Christie (talk) 02:26, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Resorting of elements
[edit]How about Real People/Character (to include Balto), Fictional Characters, and Other? Those in the unsorted list now should be moved if applicable. 17:17, 20 November 2008 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.252.20.65 (talk • contribs) 20:18, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Table?
[edit]It seems to me that this list would work far better as a table, or as an article highlighting selected sculptures plus a table for the complete list. User:Smallbones has done a wonderful job of organizing Philadelphia's public art in a table, and doing so here would make the list more coherent and user-friendly. I started a table at the bottom of the page as an example. I'll wait for comments before proceeding much further. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 22:50, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- That's an excellent way to organize a very long list. Even its sections are large, the majority of items being in sections that are bigger than our article here. However, that format does not allow much description. To preserve the descriptions of the majority of sculptures that are unarticled, we would have to make a dozen stub articles or else put the descriptions into the articles about the subjects of the sculpture. The latter would seem a poor solution for the politicians or writers whose biographies are already large and who have many monuments here and far away. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:06, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- Take another look. By my count, there are already Wikipedia articles for 18 of these sculptures (separate from articles about the subjects themselves). == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 22:24, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- Table seems like a good idea to me. Do you intend to list works alphabetically by title, or...? You might take a look at the similar lists for London, which are pretty well developed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:31, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- Ah. I should have looked thrice before mouthing off. So, there's just a few articles to be made or whatever it takes to cover the exceptions. So, I'm left with nothing against the scheme. Well, there's the notion that Outdoor sculpture in New York City which has many more items and nearly no descriptions, is a better target for early conversion, and Statues and sculptures in New York City is a better target for expansion. And those articles ought to be merged. However, since I'm not the one doing any of the above, I have nothing to squawk about. Presumably our usual thoughtful editors will do their usual thoughtful job, by whatever overall plan. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:47, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- I appreciate your fairness. I came to the article because I was trying to remember the name of the sculptor who modeled the Thorvaldsen statue. (It's a posthumous bronze copy after Thorvaldsen's marble self-portrait in Denmark.) I don't have any expertise on Central Park, so I'll let others work on the article section. I'll concentrate on filling in the table. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 15:05, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
